What about in your neighborhood? Are there any candidates there? I've also found sitters through people I've met at the health club. I got to know the woman and then met her daughter. I've also found them through church.
Just get the word out. I found that as soon as I started telling people I was looking for a sitter, lots of suggestions popped up. I didn't follow all leads, sometimes I just smiled and nodded my head.

If you attend a church or some religious services, check with the youth group, or depending upon your town, some towns have youth services where you can get referrals. West Chicago started a service like that, you get checked out, the kids are checked out and certified so there's less chance of safety issues coming up. If you have friends with kids, ask who they use or if they know someone. You may have a friend with neices who are looking to make some money, you never know until you ask.
