Seeing Mom's Having Experienced MRSA with Their Kids

Recently my 22 month old was diagnosed with MRSA. He had a boo boo that simply was not healing, so we took him to the Pediatrician to learn that his boo boo has been infected with MRSA. The antibiotics seem to be working, but I am still very anxious about this diagnosis. He has seen the doc twice, once at the diagnosis and a few days later for a follow up. I pediatrician seemed to think the antibiotic would take care of everything. This being said, I trust our pediatrician and her opinion, but I simply was not expecting any of this at all. I feel like I have been completely thrown off with the diagnosis of what I thought was a basic boo boo. Have any of you experienced this with your children?

What can I do next?

Our daughter was diagnosed with MRSA in May, she was just past her 2nd birthday then.

What antibiotic did they prescribe? Bactram and Bactroban. Bactram is oral, Bactroban is topical. We only used Bactroban, and she's doing fine now. She still has a scar from the infection, but she's OK.

MRSA is much more common than most people realize, and the name is scary. Most cases are easily treated, and there's little reason to believe he won't have a full response to the antibiotics. Just pay close attention to it, keep it covered, and call your pediatrician if anything begins to get worse.

Here's what the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:

I agree w Dana. I have had two freinds whos chikdren have gotten it (one a cut that got infected another a bug bite that did) It is a lot more common than people think, and if you google it it can scare the beejesus out of you. They were both treated with antiboiotics and got rid of the infection. If you catch it early enough (which sounds like exactly what you did) and dont have an immune issue or are currently fighting an infection it will not be as serious as everything that you heard on the news and such. It is so common that when a from my understanding when a child comes in with and infection froma cut oir likewise they will start them out on anitbiotics for mrsa until they get test results back just to be sure. Just keep an eye on it and try not to let them name scare you ((HUGS))

I have that personally. My granddaughter has had a staph (not sure what kind). Follow Dr.'s instructions, and use a body wash like Phisoderm, regularly to prevent other breakouts for a while, about a year or so. Very, very contagious, so be vigilant!

Yes, my daughter has had MRSA several times. We eventually treated her nasal tissues with Mupirocin because she was most likely colonized.

Don't worry, you didn't do anything wrong. Staph is everywhere all the time; it just needs an opportunity to take hold. Sounds like you recognized the signs and got treatment.

Yes, my 24 month old had the same thing this summer in his armpit. Unfortunately, staph infections have become more and more common. Apparently 80% of our bodies have this infection on it, but it rarely comes to surface. There is no rhyme or reason why it does come to surface or where it comes up. My son's went away in about a week while on the oral antibiotic and neosporin.

Boy have I experienced this!!! My son has eczema real bad, so a few tines he would itch and scratch and would get little scrapes, well 2 or three times they ended up getting infected and turned out to be mrsa...he had them on his leg and had one on his bottom that was so painful he could not sit down. Some he had to get drained some he did not, the antibiotic he was on was Bactrim...I know only a few medications work. He has not had one for a while, but last December I got one on my face!!!!! Thought it was a pimple, but it just kept getting worse and worse! It was real scary because it wad on my forehead and had my forehead, eye, and face swollen! It is real serious and real scary! Long story short I had to wait until it was ready to drain and was in so much pain. I was on two different medicines...it was an experience!!! I have learned to never pick anything!!! You can not get these drained until they are ready! You have to be on the right meds, always cover scrapes or anything like that with a bandaid, do not share towels, razors, etc...we are very clean people, but we became cleaner...always have lysol etc.....hope this helps! It is very serious but we have not had one of these in a while

I had a student who had MRSA in his ears! The right antibiotic clears it right up, but it keeps recurring. I would suggest that you make sure you tell any doctor who treats him from now on that he has a history of MRSA. It doesn't have to be a big deal if it's treated correctly.
