HI All - My husband works for himself. We've got 2 little boys (2 and 4 years old). We currently pay $1200/month for health insurance through Priority Health. Our deductible is $2000 for the family and there are multiple exclusions (my 4 year old had his tonsils out a few weeks ago and even with our insurance it cost us $1500 out of pocket).

Anyway - my husband wants to switch to a major medical covered HSA...anyone have any experience with them? I'd LOVE/APPRECIATE ANY/ALL feedback. This is a huge decision and I'm looking for anyone that has had any experience with this.

THANKS!!!

We switched to an HSA almost a year ago, and I love it so far! You should only switch over if you don't have any major medical problems etc. The deductible is high, but it is usually just used in emergency situations and unexpected things. In our HSA, all "well visits" are completely covered without using our deductible so it works with the kids really well. So you can maintain your family's health without putting out 1200 a month like you said. We get all of our prescriptions from Wal-Mart for $4 so it doesn't take much out of the deductible. We actually have an emergency fund set up, so that if something did come along (heaven forbid) we can easily spend the 2000 dollars without it even hurting us at all. If/when you switch over, set aside some money (the money you would have spent per month anyway) into some sort of savings account with a high interest, so you can make money while you save it for health emergencies. I hope this made sense to you, there is a lot that goes into the discussion. Anyway, it works well for our family. We save a lot of money by doing it this way. Good luck, and God bless.

You know I just had a friend have to deal with one of these. She had one and unfortunately at the end of the year she was out of funds and needed very badly to see the doctor. So she had to go on her own dime completely and get them to let her make payments. She said next year she is switching back to insurance.

We to have our own business and have had two HSA's and they can be a good thing I will tell you if you are in the state of Nebraska DO NOT use fortis insurance they do not fallow nebraska state laws and Nebraska will not make them fallow them Right now we have Midlands Choice and they have been wonderful they have paid for things that they did not need to we have been very impressed but I will tell you that make sure what ever insurance you go with that they follow state laws. Also you can go to daveramsey.com and look for there EPL for insurance agencies in your area that are very will to explaine insurances. Good luck getting new insurance is the worst...

My husband switched jobs this spring and our new insurance...well, sucks. $2,000 individual and $4,000 family deductible, and almost everything goes to deductible. Fortunatley we started an HSA with it. I was doubtful in the beginning, but it has been a God-send. My oldest son has racked up almost $2,000 worth of med bills just this fall and we've been able to pay it all out of our HSA. We have 3 small kids and this is the first time ever we haven't had a running tab at the Dr.'s office or hospital. I don't know if this is helpful, but I love our HSA. Good luck!
