Second Hand Smoke in an Apartment Complex

Just needing some advice. I live in a beautiful apartment complex, however many of my neighbors smoke. During the summer months this makes it very difficult to enjoy my home. I am unable to open my windows on the North side of my apartment due to the train right outside my window, and unable to open the remaining windows on the south side due to my neighbors smoking. My children cannot go out on the balcony due to the smokers as well. I worry about my kids and their health. Is this a dumb thing to be complaining about? Will my apartment complex be able to do anything about this problem?

Hi There,
I wanted to let you know that second hand smoke is one of the worst you can inhale you know ...No filters Etc.... I am sure that you know of this being a nurse....No matter how beautiful your complex is you need to move. I know you care about your children and so my suggestion is to find a better place. I know it may be hard but well worth the trouble. Probrably not what you wanted to hear but I know that the alvioli in your lungs as well as your childrens lungs will thank you. Sincerely, S.

Unfortunately there is not much you can do about the smokers and their second hand smoke. Even worse...if smokers live above you or even next to you, their smoke could be leaking into your apartment through the HVAC ducts causing you and your children problems.

You can ask your apartment complex if they have any non-smoking buildings...not just single apartments, but the whole building. If they do, get on the waiting list! If not, encourage the management to begin establishing non-smoking buildings for the health of the tenants. Many property management companies are going in this direction in CA.

The only other option is to move to a complex that has non-smoking buildings.

K., I have the same issue with where I live. The only things that we have found helps is keeping all of our windows open so we draw air in from other sides of our townhouse and having a fan pointed toward the outside (at a window) so it pulls air from inside and directs it out (versus pulling in smoke-filled air from the outside). I would love to hear if others have reasonable ideas too.

My daughter had the same problem, but it was in a different state. When she found out she was pregnant for the first time they had to move. She said it was the right of the neighbor to smoke and she could not do anything about that, but get herself away from it. I think that is probably what you must do.

Please do complain about the second hand smokers. I have to sweep people off of my front porch all the time. Eventually they go away, so you don't stop until they do. Best of Luck.
