I think Genie Bras put more into their commercials than into their product! I think they are very difficult for those of us with a little more on top.
For non-dress use, I actually like the basic Champion sports bras - good support, the straps don't slide down, etc. They aren't good under a clingy top or for dressy things of course, but for the gym, under tshirts and just everyday, they work great.
Beyond that, I really think it makes sense to go to a good bra store. To me, that means a good department store with trained bra fitters (not teenagers working after school to sell you the latest!), or to a store like Lady Grace that specializes in bras of many types. I saw a show (Oprah? Something like that) about how many of us are completely wearing the wrong bra size - it was a huge percentage, more than half of us!
The bras are more expensive but you won't waste money because you will actually be able to wear the bra you bought! What I usually do is go in with 2 specific tops that I need to find a bra for (vs. regular clothes that will go with anything), and I confidently tell the saleswoman what I need. I wear my best bra so she can see what I like (or what I think fits - sometimes she tells me it's not as good as I think!). I am more than willing to let her measure me, then I take a few bras in with me, and after each one I absolutely invite her to come back and see how it fits! Yes, I let her into the changing room! It's the only way. Even if the bra isn't going to work, I let her see it so she can see what's wrong with it. I think that helps her make better choices for the next round. I do that with 2-3 bras and I do not for one second feel like I'm taking up her time. That's really important! I'm also comfortable letting her adjust me a little - if you are, tell her. If you aren't, tell her. (They work any way that's comfortable for you.)
When all is done, I usually buy 1-2 bras (say one of each). And then I take them home and wear them for a week or two - do the straps slide, do they look good under different tops, etc. Then I go back if necessary and buy 1 or 2 more in whichever style I think is most practical. It's absolutely worth the time because I never go home with something I'm dissatisfied with after a few wearings. If I have coupons then of course I take advantage of those, for buy one/get one or a percentage off, or birthday month special, whatever they offer.
I'll buy shirts and shorts on sale, but I draw the line at discount bras - I don't find they ever really pay off. If I find a great bra at Lady Grace or a good department store, I do write the size and model number down and stick it in my wallet - then if I find the bra on a discount rack at a place like Marshall's, I'll buy it on clearance. But that's it.
I also wash bras by hand in the sink or I put them on the gentle cycle (with panties, thin socks or very thin tops only - no heavy clothing) but I never ever put them in the dryer - drying rack or hanging on a hanger only. They last much longer.
