OK....so my son has been having clay-like pooop since he started solids....is this normal? I started giving him apple juice mixed with some water like the dr suggested....and it helps some of the time? Advice and comments are greatly appreciated....should I be worried?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I will try a few things and let you all know....it was interesting to hear that bananas helped one baby...I thought they could possibly stop babies up (said several sources on the internet).

My grand daughter was born on 10/16. She has had problems with this area since day one it seems. What we do is give her prune juice mixed with water. About 2 parts water to 1 part prune juice. She actually drinks this and likes it. We dont give it to her everyday but only when she needs to go cause she seems to be getting better as she gets a little older and is eating different foods. Also, try prunes as a solid food. She likes her mixed with Oatmeal cereal.

Good luck !

Apple juice can be binding... (odd as it may seem) but Pear juice is much better to help loosen bowels.

Prune juice is the strongest followed by Pear. Also, NO rice cereal if your baby is constipated. use infant oatmeal instead works like a charm.

Good luck

Both my kids have had problems with pooping. My son still does but I found something just recently that really helps my daughter. She is 14 months and I gave her grape juice (the regular purple kind from welches) and I put about 2 oz of juice with 3 oz of water. She loves it and is has REALLY helped her. We tried "white grape" but this works SOOO much better. My son won't drink it....so if you can get him to drink it then it might work wonders for you. Also you might give him "farmers market vegatables" from Gerber. That seems to help her too.

Good Luck!

You can make sure he eats some fresh fruits, yogurt and applesauce. my son loves the little clementine oranges and grapes. I have to make sure he doesn't eat too many oranges, or else his diaper is a royal mess!

It's normal. When children go to solid food their bowel movements change in texture and color. Good luck being a mom!:)

I would not be worried if I were you as long as he does not seem in pain and is some-what reguar but I would up the liquids.

Are you using only 100% juice? Make sure it is 100% because sugar (a common additive) can cause constipation. Also, PEAR juice (100% of course) is much better for constipation issues than apple, not that apple is not good, but pear has more fiber. It is usually the first juice recommended by pedi for babies and is in the gerber/baby juice section.
And, you can add water to (any) juice a bit to make it not quite as sweet and up your baby's water/liquid intake (watered down juice will not "fill" the babies stomach as quick, thus more liquid will be consumed).

Good luck but it sounds like this is just a normal adjustment to me with a couple of small hurdles to over-come! I had two babies and the first went smooth transition to solids. The second had much more issue with constipation (and still does) once on solids and drank and still drinks twice (if not more) the amount of my first child and still has more solid stools! Every child is different!

Good luck!

My baby was born on 10/10/2009, so I guess he is almost the same age as your baby. Yeah thats alright, my baby also has clay like poop after I introduced him solids. I noticed that banana's make his bowels a little bit softer. He seems to also poop about every alternate day. Now that they eat solids, their poop will not be as watery as it use to be with just milk. My baby's doctor said that we should still give 26-32 oz of breast milk/formula milk as that is what will give them the nutrients rather than the solids until the age of 12 months. I have noticed that when he takes alot of milk the bowel's also come out softer and more frequent. My baby's doctor also said not to give much fruit juices as they have too much sugar, and that the baby will get use to sweet tastes. But I guess anything in moderate is good.

It's normal. His body is just getting used to different foods, so his poops will change drastically. If he gets constipated, give him 1tsp. of Karo syrup mixed with warm water in his bottle/sippy cup, it's a huge help!

Welcome to the stage when you feed your baby solids & it poops solids. The clay look is just what happens when you start feeding your baby solid baby food. It's alllll goood.

Hi E.,
You should definitely see changes in his poop with the start of solids. However, there are things you can do to make sure he stays regular and doesn't get constipated.

Rice cereal is one of the simplest forms of food to introduce first (easy on the digestive system), but tends to stop a baby up. So, when my son was ready to move on to a new food introduction, the first thing I did was move him to a higher fiber, but still simple, cereal like oatmeal. In fact, once he was "done" with rice cereal, we fed him primarily oatmeal and barley cereals as his cereal. Then, when we introduced veggies (first) and fruits (second)---highly recommended in that order b/c they don't get the taste of "sweets" first and then refuse veggie baby food---we rarely had any problems.

I remember only twice having to deal with his being constipated, at which point we mixed 1 oz of prune juice with 3 oz of breastmilk/ formula to make his then-4 oz bottle.

I hope this helps!

Oh, and I've read that oranges shouldn't be introduced until 1 year old due to the acid in the citrus being hard on their sensitive stomachs. I'd ask your pedi if he/she agrees before feeding him oranges...
