My daughter is seven and was just diagnosed with scoliosis. Has anyone dealt with this? Does anyone have any recommendations on what we can other than wait and see with xrays every four months? Are there any moms support groups online that you know of? Thanks in advance!

www.scoliosis.org is a great non-profit site. It has patient let forums and helps answer lots of questions.

Our daughter was diagnosed at the end of 5th grade and surgery was performed at Scottish Rite in Dallas. Wonderful care for this type of operation. She is now 17 and will be going back for her last yearly checkup. She was swimming on a club team during the summer and I really feel that was therapeutic. Her curvature had advanced at a rapid rate. Scottish Rite also recommends braces for some of their patients as well.

I'll hold on to your post. I don't have a lot of details, however, my 13 yr old neice is scheduled for surgery for this in late April.

I'll ask SIL. They are having surgery done at Vanderbilt

I was diagnosed with it in elementary school. They just kept an eye on it and over time it went away.

A friend of mine had a severe case and had to wear a brace for many years. Pretty horrible, but she disguised it a bit by wearing pretty scarves. I don't know if they still do that, though ... that was back in the early 80s when she was wearing one.

My friend HAD it. She lost her diagnosis after doing the exercise given to her by the orthopedist. Her spine simply straightened out.

Also, my friends son has it. He was diagnosed at his 3 year old checkup. His is congenital scoliosis which is quite different than the aquired scoliosis. He had to have other testing done to confirm his kidneys and heart were OK. They were and now they just keep an eye on it every couple months.

Good Luck!

Wow, really a support group? You must be a worrier - just like me ;) We go to the Mayo Clinic and we were given the same plan....every 4 months my daughter (now 13) goes in to have it checked. They will continue to check it till she stops growing. She has two curves. She plays sports all year. I would assume a orthopedic surgeon reviewed it, if not - I guess I would ask for one to.

Have you looked into Chiropractic? Check it out! ICPA has a listing of Pediatric Chiro's all over. My husband is a chiropractor and we have kids who have been diagnosed as well. We're reversing it! Just wanted to pass that along!

I have scoliosis between my shoulder blades. It wasn't discovered until I was an adult. As a result one shoulder is lower than the other making one arm longer and I tip my head at an angle. It hasn't been a problem for me except that I have some back pain from time to time after having been in a couple of auto accidents. I was told that the scoliosis makes my back more vulnerable.
