School Tax ID

OK - I'm doing my extensions at the last minute - my bad! - and I just realized I can deduct a portion of my son's nursery school tuition from last year. Sooo, apparently I need the school's federal tax ID to claim this deduction. Unfortunately, the school closed down at the end of the school year this past spring.

I called the forwarding number and the secretary said she had put in a call to the accountant (I guess I'm not the only one asking this question), but she wouldn't have the information until he calls back and she's not sure when he's going to call back. The returns are due this upcoming Monday. I guess this is what I get for waiting until the last minute! :(

Anybody else had difficulty getting their daycare or nursery school tax ID? How did you handle it on your tax return? Did the IRS give you grief if you didn't have it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the tips! My lucky day! I called back today and she had the number, so I can go ahead and file a couple days early. Really the day care and preschool programs should give out this information along with the rest of the school packet. Both of the programs my son attended in 2010 did not have this information readily available.

Thanks again!

Try FEINsearch.com, they may charge a fee, but if you can't get a person who can help on the phone and depending on how much you'll get to deduct it may be worth your expense.

Also, if you cannot locate the number tell the IRS this, they may be able to help you out.

Our daycares and schools have always handed them out at the end of the year.

I wonder if you can call the State and see if they can give you the number. The daycare had to be State certified. Most states have a cap on what you can claim...I think ours it $2500, which is a drop in the bucket if you send your kids year round full time, but it's something.

Do you know any of the parents or keep in touch with them? They may have it. Or try the IRS good luck. It maybe on forms you have received from the school. I would start there. I am going to ask my daycare and see what they tell me. I will get back to you. I always claim the daycare and summer programs. (ymca/cyo/daycare)

Never had a problem with it.
They usually handed out a receipt (for the whole prior year) sometime in January an that had the tax ID on it.
