V.C. asks from Newport News, VA

I'm going crazy looking at information about Hampton Roads public schools. We are relocating to the Hampton Roads because my husband is taking a new job at Langley AFB.

May I ask for some opinions of "good" public schools for K-5 in Hampton, Newport News, or Norfolk? We would prefer to live closest to VA Beach as possible, but not in VA Beach as the commute would burden us. I'm also willing to consider Portsmouth/Chesapeake if we can keep the commute down to 30 minutes to Langley. Any help is appreciated...

Thank you!

Some of the best public schools in the area are in York County on the Peninsula, which is very close to Langley. My dh works there and he has only about a 10 minute commute. Here is a link for more information.

Hi there. My husband works out at Langley, as well. Va Beach is about a 45-hour long drive (on a good day). Suffolk or Norfolk may be a good option for you?? The tunnel can be a bear in the morning, too. We live in Yorktown (BEST school district). The houses are a little more costly than the rest of the peninsula, but with the market like it is, you can get some great deals!!! My kids go to Gloria Day (Hampton) for their pre-K and pre-school (goes up to 5th) and I LOVE it!!!! They have bus pick-up and drop-off, as well (we live 20 minutes from the school).
Hope this helps!!! Have a safe move!!!

I guess you could say I'm down on government schools in general so I homeschool. But if you're stationed at Langley, you definitely want to stay on the Peninsula side of Hampton Roads. The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel can be a horror not only at work traffic time but just about any time during the summer (due to people traveling to or from Virginia Beach). York County and Poquoson schools are the best in the area close to Langley AFB. I wish you all the best!

I just moved to Norfolk in September and the two elementary schools that I found to be the best overall were Larchmont and Bay View. My kids are at Bay View as the Larchmont area is rather ritsy and I couldn't find an affordable place to live. From where I am, without traffic, I can get to Langely in 15 to 20 minutes.

We live in the Hilton Village area of Newport News and we love it. We have a great public school here, Hilton Elementary, that faces out on the river and has a fishing pier. It is a small school with a great community spirit and good teachers. It is also a magnet school, so if you don't live in the neighborhood, you can still apply to go to Hilton. Deer Park is also supposed to be a good magnet school in Newport News.
