My sister-in-law visited for the holidays & had a strange rash...we tried several creams & such while she was here but nothing completely cleared it up. After I started feeling itchy & noticed a rash on me, I looked it up online & figured out it was scabies. Now, she's been to the doctor & so have I & it's been confirmed. My husband & two of our kids now have it. My doctor prescribed a cream treatment to do on all of us. We did the treatmnt on Monday & we are supposed to repeat it next Monday. I have also washed everything we had contact with as best as possible. I read that it may take two to four weeks for the itching to stop. My question is...how am I supposed to know if the medication worked? I don't think that any of us have had any NEW spots, but we don't have any LESS spots either and we are DEFINITELY still itching! Also, if anyone has any OTC or herbal remedies for the itching, that would be great! Any other thoughts/suggestions/personal experiences would be welcome! TIA!

What can I do next?

Hello B.,

The people at Wholefoods and sprouts can tell you if they have anything that can help you.

here is a link to a google search:

We had this when we were children and it seems you can claw yourself to death and it really gets bad when in water or taking a bath. CALIMINE LOTION!! It dried it up fast and it was inexpensive.

I got it once in high school. THey gave me an oral medication and a topical cream. Oatmeal baths worked wonders. They told me to replace my sheets and pillow cases bc they can harbor in stuff like that for months. I lysoled everything I can in contact with for weeks. Its a big pain in the butt, but it is so highly contagious that you have to.

My daughter got it about 6 months ago. The Dr. gave her and my husband and I the "one time" treatment creme but told us we wouldn't know if it worked for 4 weeks. Well, it did work. I know since the itching is still there it's hard to think it's going to work or end but it did for us. Just try calamine lotion and baths until the itching stops and know that it will be gone soon if you did the treatment right. At first we didn't think it worked since my daughter was still itching like crazy, but it did work!! Good luck.

I'd try to be patient. You are already following doctors advice. soaking in baking soda might work for itching. Claritin might help with the itching for you and your husband and you can get the non-drowsy formula. Don't know what the kids can take.

My husband had scabies and it took forever for it to go away! More than 4 weeks. I don't think there is anything you can really do to take the itch away. The medicine/cream does help although it doesn't seem like it. My kids and I had to put the cream on to prevent adn it worked, thankfully we didn't get the rash.

Hang in there! It will go away eventually!

B.,

I had scabies in elementary school. I remember how miserable that was. Sorry you are going through that. My stepsister and I was given medication from the dermatologist but I don't remember what it was. I do remember my mom washing our sheets. It seemed like she did it every day...along with our towels from bathing. Best of luck with all of this.
