Sausage

Is having sausage once a week too much? I've pretty much banned hot dogs, except when we are out, so now my hubby is substituting sausage.

I think I mentioned that he is the primary cook and is very particular about what he eats.

For the most part, my daughter eats very well. Lots of fruits, likes her veggies, etc.

Mind you we mix up our meals with seafood and chicken, too.

Am I over reacting? I just think sausage is just as bad as hot dogs

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I think what bothers me most is how processed it is, and of course the fat and nitrates. In the name of "compromise," once a week isn't bad.

While I am grateful to have married a cook, we don't always agree on what's healthy. And believe me when I say, he doesn't want me to cook and I get nervous when I do.

Believe me, hubby may cook but I clean up every meal and night. I keep the kitchen and he cooks!

Sausage is not mystery meat. I can't actually compare because I cover my ears and start yelling lalalalalalalalala whenever anyone tries to tell me what is in a hot dog because I know I will never eat them again.

Sausage is mostly pork, spices, I think too much salt but that is it. Not nearly as harmful as that science experiment we call hot dogs.

I would just be happy hubby is primary cook. So...my vote is over reacting.

I think it is fine...she sounds like she has a well rounded palate.

I think you are over reacting but I also LOVE Sausage! I pretty much substitute if for most things that asked for "ground beef", I put it in my spaghetti, stuff green peppers, taco meat (half and half), hamburger helpers I use sausage ONLY, I love it.

I also grew up on a hog farm, so almost every meal we had some type of pork product. Let me just say, my grandfather will be 90 this summer, grandma 86, my dad's health is bad because he's a smoker, not from the pork products, so I don't think it's bad, but to each their own.

I don't think you should feel guilty letting your family have sausage once a week. Your husband is grown, so that doesn't matter, but your daughter has already developed good eating habits, so Momma, you are doing GREAT!

No, once per week is fine. Twice per week is just fine.

Your husband is the primary cook. Let him enjoy. When you cook, don't cook sausage.

If you want him to cook less sausage, then praise him when he cooks something you like and don't praise him when he cooks something you don't like. I got my wife to change the way she cooked when we first got married by doing this. It took a while, but it worked. Now, when I'm the primary cook, I cook what I want, providing its something she likes. (Example: she doesn't like "hot & Spicy" so when she is held late for a business/dinner meeting, I make jalapeno poppers, or stuffed jalapeno. for me.)

Sausage can be just as good for you as any pork meat. I like pork, beef chicken and most meat. I don't do snails and have offered many people that say they like escargot to come and get organic snails from my garden, but have never gotten even one taker.

Smile. Be happy. Enjoy that your husband likes to cook for you and your family. Always have the attitude of gratitude.

Good luck to you and yours.

Oh boy....I can't answer. I adore pork. Sausage, hot dogs, bacon, ham, whatever. I choose the brands without nitrates.

You could also grind your own sausage. It's meat and spices. Nothing wrong with that.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Bottom line... the key is moderation with anything.

If I had a personal cook, I don't think I'd be picky either. I am a great cook and enjoy it but the thought of someone having a meal ready for me and cleaning up sounds SWEET!

Yes, they are just as bad in SOME ways. They aren't typically pieced together left over parts. However, they are still full of sodium, msg, and nitrates. (Nitrates are the worst. They are in processed meats, which is what sausage is considered.) You CAN get the organic, nitrate free, MSG free ones. They are still typically loaded with sodium, but I have seen low sodium versions. Honestly, I would not eat sausage once a week. I definitely wouldn't let my son. But, you have to decide what you are comfortable with. I don't care if others give their child sausage once a week, we all make choices with food. Nitrates are just one thing I don't mess with. Everyone has their "thing" that they like to avoid. There are things I let my son eat, that others avoid.

We like sausage in our house too. We USED to eat it pretty regularly. Then one afternoon, my hubby and his brother decided to make their own from scratch. Interesting flavors like chicken with basil and dried tomato, pork with poblanos. As they were preparing things we saw the pile of fat required to be added to mix to make a nice sausage. That sealed the deal for us. Seeing it on our counter made us really see all the bad fats in there.

So we still enjoy our sausage, maybe once a month. I suppose it's like anything though, balance it with the good and you'll be ok.

BUT if the hot dog ban is an attempt to avoid nitrates, most smoked sausage (and hot dogs, pepperoni, salami, many lunch meats) are full of nitrates.

Depends on the sausage. Check the ingredients.
As long as the rest of your diet is decent, I really wouldn't consider it a problem.
And as the primary cook in my family, my motto has always been, "If you don't want what I feel like cooking, make your own damn dinner."

I don't think you have anything to worry about. If you want how about encouraging turkey or chicken sausage for a healthier option? There are so many good flavors and varieties out there now!

Buy the nitrate free kind. Our local grocery store has it but we sometimes pick up other varieties at whole foods or trader joes. Have you ever made sausage? It is easy. It is just ground up meat with or without extra fat and herbs/spices. Once a week sounds good to me.

Once a week is not too much. Everything in moderation. There is nothing wrong with hot dogs either, in moderation. You can also buy healthier sausages, organic, nitrate free etc. Why be healthy if you take all the joy out of life?

Any processed meat is bad, and worse if it contains Sodium Nitrate, which 99% of them do! (Google processed meats and Sodium Nitrate; everyone should do this!). You can find sausage without Nitrates at Whole Foods, still somewhat processed, so not 100% healthy, but without the bad preservatives. So, eating that once a week, I would think Ok.
OOh I like 2kidmama's suggestion for making it from scratch! Sounds yum!

I personally don't like sausage, but there are so many different kinds.
My son likes it and I cook it for him from time to time.
We HATE sausage on pizza and always order it to be left off.

If your husband does the cooking, I don't think it's fair to treat him like your own personal chef. I mean, telling him what he can and cannot cook isn't really fair. After all, he isn't asking YOU to eat sausage if you don't like it or find it unhealthy. Sausage for him once a week shouldn't be a problem.

I was a pretty strict vegetarian for many, many years. When I was married, I cooked during the week and my husband cooked on the weekends. I cooked things for them that I didn't eat and my husband cooked things especially for me like grilled vegetables, etc. We didn't try telling each other what we could or could not or should or should not eat.

Sausage once a week isn't a deal breaker.
I know a couple who've been together for over 20 years. He does the grocery shopping and the cooking. She keeps the kitchen clean so he can have at it. It's worked very well for them.

You're a lucky woman!!!

you'll have to be more specific when you say sausage as there are many varieties and hot dogs are technically sausages. Today there are healthier options then there once was. I would not do smoked and look for locally made if you can, low fat would be a bonus.

When I buy sausage, I try my best to buy turkey or chicken. I usually stay away from smoked because I don't really liked smoked meat.
