Sandals for Boys - Love Keens but They Stink!

Last year we got my son (then 2 years old) a pair of Keens for the summer. He wore them constantly, and they were cute and stylish, and held up really well. My only complaint was that after only a few weeks of wearing them, they began to stink, and my son's feet stank too. I would wash them, and they would be better for a day or two before they became unbearably smelly again. I even conacted Keen about it and was advised to use tee tree oil or a cleaner called Greased Lightning to clean them. The tee tree oil I found was really expensive, and the Greased Lightning had enough warnings on it's label to make me not want to even keep it in my home, let alone apply it to my toddler's shoes, to have him seep it into his skin. Anyway, the point is that I loved the Keens otherwise, but don't think I can endure the smell issue again.
Can anyone recommend a similar type of durable sandal with a closed-toe that perhaps doesn't have the same smell issue?

What can I do next?

We had stinky feet issues with Keen sandals too, and I gave up on them after a summer. Why spend that much if the kid is going to have feet that smell like a barn? LOL

My boys do wear Crocs all summer long. But we live out in the country and its so nice to have them just be able tobe washed off when they get dirty. They hold up well too, easy on and off, and they have good support for little feet.

We have used the neoprene type Nike sandals too, they are comfy for kids' feet too.

Find a pair of sandals that has a rubber or plastic bottom instead of one with a cloth lining. (I believe keens have a cloth lining). I think most of the Merrel brand would work.

I use Nike sandals for my 2 1/2 year old son. They also have some closed toe sandals and we haven't had any problems with them.

My DD is in her Keens night and day too with no smell, and it's not because she's a girl. I'm wondering if maybe it was the material on the top? Some are more leathery and some are more nylon-y. She has the leather ones that seem to keep smells down.

Otherwise, maybe put cornstarch on his feet in the mornings. GL! we love Keens at our house too :)

although i swore i would never put my SON in a pair of "crocs", my sitter bought him some cheapo knockoffs from walmart, and they are the BEST sandals - he loves them, can put them on/off by himself, AND the best part, they're totally cleanable. and his have never smelled bad, ever!

we also love the keens and bought our so his second pair for this season, but ur right, the smell is awful! i found out last season that they just cant b simply washed - i used a brush to get into all the little cracks of the insole about every other week and that did the trick!

My son loves his Crocs, and I love that they can be washed & dry quickly. After wearing them all day, his feet would stink- not the shoes though... boys just have more sweaty feet, I think. Good luck!

Keens and Tevas stink! They just stink! In fact, any sandal (Nike, Wal-mart brand or cartoon character etc.) I put on my boys after the age of 2 have all stunk. Tea tree oil does last a long time - it could be worth it in the end. You can get it at Wal-Mart and Target where the price isn't too bad. If you find something - please post - I am in need of non-stinky sandals too.
