i put some bleach in the washer and let it run without anything in it. i also use bleach for the bathtub.
Hello all. My son has had a bad rash which turns out to be a fungus. Joy. I cloth diaper and I want to make sure that the fungus isn't in the washing machine . . .so that is why I would like to sanitize it. Would running a wash with bleach work or would I need to do something else?? Same with the bath tub. My dad has scared me thinking I could get athletes foot from it. I'm not sure about it, but still would like to sanitize it since my boy pee's in the tub ALL THE TIME. (oh and no fear I am stripping the cloth diapers too and using a disposables till it clears up)
Gamma G. It actually is bad for modern day cloth to be bleached (unless it's just the prefolds) to often. I have however asked to actual companies what to do and they suggest using a little. Enough that I wouldn't feel would be enough to clean the washer. Thanks all!!!

I clean my bathtub, toilets, sink, and counters with Comet with bleach and paper towels, rinsing throughly gets rid of the debris. It you wanted to make sure it is sanitized you could do like child care centers and make a spray bottle with bleach water in it and spray the tub down after each bather is finished and let it air dry.
As for the washer, yes, hot water and a bit of bleach will do the job. But my thoughts are that you would be washing the diapers in hot water with bleach anyway....isn't that enough?
Here is the recipe for making a sanitizing solution for a spray bottle.

There are a couple of products you can use to clean your washing machine:
1) http://www.drugstore.com/tide-washing-machine-cleaner/qxp...

But, I would simply use bleach and hot water to clean both the washer & tub. Run the washer w/ bleach & hot water. That should sanitize it. I personally use Clorox Anywhere Hard Surfaces on the tub between cleaning. I use that spray just about everywhere!! LOVE IT!

Baking soda should also do the trick. :)
