Salt Water Aquarium Making Dust

My husband has a salt water aquarium that has an open top on it. The evaporation of the water is creating dust (from the salt) and tons of it. The whole room is covered in this very fine white dust that doesn't dust off like 'normal' dust does. You pretty much have to wash it off. It's EVERYWHERE, even the stuff in the desk drawers is covered with it (the drawers are shut). I put an air purifier in the room and that hasn't helped. It's a nice sized open room. I'm fed up with it. It's ruining everything in the room, computer, pictures, books (this room is also the office). Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I'm going to move the air purifier right next to the aquarium and maybe it'll pick more stuff up but the filter already needs to be cleaned often so it's getting a lot already.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

UPDATE: There is a lid on the aquarium...it's a light kit and there is an open space between the top of the tank and the light. My husband uses this kind of lid because the water gets too hot in the summer....

Cover it with a lid that matches the stand. The cover helps keep the heat in, too, so the heater runs less in the winter. This will lower your electric bills, keep the fish healthier, and reduce the salt dust. I imagine a cover would reduce the water evaporation rate, too, which will also save you money on saltwater. Is there a reason there is no cover? I would be afraid of things falling into the tank!

This sounds like a problem with your setup that's not typical. Maybe talk to your local fish store about the pump. Is it spraying water or something? We've had a saltwater aquarium with an open top for 8 years in three houses, and I can't ever remember an issue like you describe, even after being out of the house for a week or two. There's a slight buildup on top of the lights, but the dining room table next to it is just fine.

It should have a lid over the top to help contain the evaporation. I would pick one up and that should get rid of your dust probelm all togehter.
