My son is 2 and half years old. He sleeps on the second story of our home and in the summer time it gets terribly hot up there. I have fans circulating the air but i need to leave the windows open to let the hot air out. I want him to be safe up there and my mother in law says that the answer to m,y question is to just leave the windows shut at all times... not an option. So i was wondering if any one knew anyhting about safety devices for windows other than bars on the outside.. any help or suggestions would be nice... thanks every one
We put a regular Baby gate in the window. It fit snugly inside the window frame, the top of the gate is just above where the window locks, and he cannot push it out. I have upstairs bedrooms, and have my whole life. I rememer my mom doing the same thing when I was little. HTH, at least it won't cost you a ton of money buying something new!

Do you have screens on the windows? If not, you may want to get some if you can. Also, are they low enough where he could actually reach the windows? I do know that you can buy (pretty cheaply) little alarm like sensors that you can stick on the windows, or doors, etc. that will detect opening and an alarm will sound. I think they sell them at major retailers. I great place is the catalog One Step Ahead. They carry window wedges that allow the window to be opened, yet your son won't be able to open it any higher than you want it to go. They sell for $4.95/ They also carry a window guard, which is like a bar, but they are removeable. Their site is great, so you can look around to see what might work www.onestepahead.com
can you open the windows up at the top?? mine can be either way, screen at the top or the bottom.
If yours does that then thats a great option.
If not I would go with the things the lady above me suggested!!

Can't you move his bed down to the first floor where it's cooler and everyone else is? Or get a room air conditioner for the windows?

Anyway, there is something called Guardian Angel Window Guard. It can be found on onestepahead.com. It can be removed quickly in case of an emergency. There are also window wedges/locks that can be used to stop the window from being pushed up too far. It would allow for ventilation, but not allow the window to be opened too wide.
Also, my sister and I had a finished bedroom in the attic (gets VERY hot!) of my parents' house, but there was no air conditioning up there, and no money for a window A/C for several years, so we used to put make-shift beds in downstairs bedrooms or in the living room so we would be cooler.

I would look into the window wedges even if the windows can be open from the top. Also some windows have a little thing, not sure what to call it that allows you to open the window to a certain point and no further. YOu could also go to like Home Depot or Lowes and have dowel rodes cut to the window size you need. It will keep the bottom window from opening and the top window you can open the only problem with this idea is that you can open the top all the way where as the wedges will only let it open to a certain point. Hope this help, went through this a few years ago myself.
