Can anyone tell me how to fix a running toilet? It is driving me crazy and i'm sure not helping our water bill. One of our toilets keeps running after being flushed unless you wiggle the handle then it will stop, how can I fix this?

What can I do next?

Real easy...just go to Home Depot....ask someone in the plumbing dept about it...there is a $4.00 cheap kit...or you can go with the expensive $7.00 kit...(we chose the expensive one)...takes about 30 minutes to fix...just follow the directions on the box....easy fix for anyone. :-) Good Luck.

I noticed when my toilet run it is becuase that big bulb like black thing, in not totally covering up the whole. and the chain was broken or bent so that the "float" would not go down.

In my experience, the toilet runs because the bulb is not completely down over the area that allows the water to run down so it's as if the toilet does not completely fill up like it should so that triggers the toilet to continue to run the water until it's full. The thing I had to do was buy a longer chain so that when we flush, the longer chain will allow the bulb to close completely. That should stop it from running otherwise, I am not sure.

The "plug" inside your toliet tank is not going down properly. It could be a problem with the actual chain attached to this or the float which determines the level of water. Next time you flush, take the top off your toliet tank to see which problem it is.

The suggestions below are right on the money; it could be any of those items, but I would suggest replacing the entire insides of the tank. It's not expensive or difficult; also, Home Depot and Lows caries a kit just for that. The thing you would want to know before you go is the depth of the tank, as the main filler assembly needs to be the right height. I think I replaced mine for about $15 and it took about 15 minutes. A pet peeve of mine though is the speed at which the tank is refilled. So if a slow refill would aggravate you, stay away from anything that boasts "whisper" or quiet.

Good luck,
K.

Just wanted to say that I agree with most of the other comments, but just wanted to add that when I had my first house, the toliet ran, so I called a plumber. $75 later, it worked fine. Then 6 months later it ran again, and this time, I just went to Home Depot, bought a toliet kit for like $15 and installed it myself (It had directions on the package) Now anytime we have a plumbing problem - my husband send ME to Home Depot.... So it's not that hard of a fix! Hope this was reassuring!!!

Hi there -
Take the lid off of the back of the toilet. First make sure that the chain that's attached to the level ball isn't tangled on anything. If it's not, there's a contraption inside (it could be a knob or it could be a lever) that adjusts the height of the ball. Make it lower. The goal is to get the ball back into the water.
Good Luck

We also had this problem for a while and once we worked out what it was it was very simple to fix. You probably do not need a plumber...

* Take the lid of the cistern
* Look for the chain that attaches to the handle (the one you use to flush)
* Make sure it is kinked or caught up - if it is, straighten it out so that it is long enough to allow the plug to close fully.

You can buy a spare chain & other parts for very little money at Ace Hardware, Home Depot etc.

Hope this helps - Good luck!

My mom has this problem. Apparently to fix it is more than installing a new toilet so she has just lived with it for several years now:(

We also had this problem & it was very easy to fix. If you open up the lid to the toilet you'll see the chain atatached to the plug. Check to make sure the chain isn't kinked or anything because if it is it is stopping the plug from closing up all the way which causes the toilet to keep running. Hope this helps...good luck.

Hi Stacey,

I have had this problem. There are a couple of things to look for...

1) Check the flap in the bottom at the bottom of the tank. If you have a chain flusher loosen the chain to the handle. You may have to try it a couple of times until it sits right.

2)If the flap is all the way down and water is still running go to Home Depot. You should be able to purchase just the flap or the whole kit.

Hope it helps!
