My 4 month old son has rotavirus. The Dr. said to make sure to keep him hydrated, but that's all there is to do. Is this truly the case, or has anyone figured anything else out to make this go away faster? We are going on a week today.....

What can I do next?

My recommendation is to sterilize everything possible. It is a fecal-mouth transmission, so anything that might possibly have fecal particles on it can give it to you again. Our daughter was doing projectile poop, we'd open her diaper and it would shoot across the room, so her room was getting super sterilized as a result. Hand washing is super important and the BRAT diet was also helpful. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. Our DD hates rice cereal so our Dr. recommended yogurt instead. That helped also. Good luck!

Also, if you're formula feeding, Similac makes a liquid form called Similac A-D which is anti-diarrheal. We found some at Walgreens. Our daughter didnt want to drink it though, since it was so much thicker than her regular, powder formula, but our Dr. recommended trying it.

At that age, yes, that is really all you can do. When my nephew had it several years ago, I'm pretty sure my daughter got it too but since she was still nursing, it wasn't nearly as bad for her. We were told to cut out the milk products until he got over it so if you are nursing, you might try cutting back on the dairy that you eat until he is over it. Also, for future reference, my nephew's doctor recommended giving him kool-aide that was diluted by 1/2 instead of Pedilyte. He said that the Kool-aide has all the same stuff in it, they like the taste better, and it is SOOOOO much cheaper. We have done the Kool-aide thing ever since when our kids get diarhea and it clears it up in no time at all.

hi M....my son had it when he was almost 1 and we just got over it again last week (he is now 4). when he was 1 he was still nursing so the dr told me to eat lots of yogurt or feed it to him so he could get those nutrients. i was also told to drink lots of gatorade or powerade (anything with plenty of electrolytes). he had it for about 12-14 days and it was awful so i understand your pain. he also got it again last week. we went to urgent care and they gave him some powerade to drink and also yogurt. he only had it for 5 days this time. basically just drink drink drink...it'll come out, but don't let your little one get dehydrated. good luck to you and hope he gets better soon!

I'm so sorry to hear that your baby has rotavirus. It's a miserable illness. Both my boys have had it. My older son had it when he was 8 months old and had to be hospitalized because he refused to drink anything. They had to hook him up to an IV. I was so glad when I was able to give my younger son the rotavirus vaccine. That makes a huge difference in recovery time, but it still takes about a week to get through. One of the tips I would suggest would be to add Culturelle (a probiotic) to his bottle. You can get it over the counter. Ask your pharmacist or your doctor how much to add -- probably only a half a tablet once a day. (You just open the capsule and pour some into their Pedialyte or water). My pediatrician recommended it and it really helps. Good luck -- I know how awful it is. Take care.

I know this will sound really disgusting- but it truly works. My son was hospitalized twice with rotavirus. The next year, all 3 of my kids got it and we decided to try a friend's suggestion before taking them in to the doc. Within one day, they were up and playing and feeling tons better!! Gross- yes- but very effective and much faster! You take luke warm water and a bulb syringe and slowly squirt the water into their 'bum'. It soaks up into their colon and intestines and helps rehydrate much quicker. This is how other countries do it, instead of hospitalizing kids! Pedia pops (the popsicles made by pedialyte) are a good start after they start holding stuff down- and then start the BRAT diet (slowly) like someone previously mentioned-- bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. Good luck!!

Hi M.! We went through this last year with my two youngest. My 2 year old daughter had to be hospitalized for dehydration. The baby got it right after and I took him to the pediatrician. She recommended Floristor. I think its similar to the Culterelle someone mentioned in another post. Its a powder that you can add to their formula or whatever they're drinking. It doesn't require a prescription, but you do have to ask for it. The pharmacist keeps it behind the counter. Also, most don't keep the kids' dosage on hand, so you may have to call around to a few pharmacies to see who has it in stock, otherwise it takes them 24 hours to get it. It doesn't cure the virus, but lessens its severity. My son did not get dehydrated and his vomiting and diarrhea were not nearly as severe as my daughter after we gave him the Floristor.
