Rolling from Back to Tummy

My 8 week old son surprised me last night when he decided to roll from his back to his tummy. I watched him do this and it really took me by surprise. After giving him his bottle I placed him back in his crib on his back. He squirmed and squirmed trying to flip himself over again. He began getting very angry and I began worrying about him suffocating himself in the middle of night. Needless to say, I let him sleep cradled in my arms for the rest of the night. Has anyone experienced this with their infant at such an early age? 8 weeks seems way too young. He has great neck/head control when he's sitting up but when he's on his belly he struggles. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Well, I called the pediatrician and he said if he's strong enough to roll himself over then he should be strong enough to move his head so he doesn't smother himself in the mattress. He's been rolling onto his tummy every night now and is sleeping LIKE A CHAMP! My nervousness has subsided and I am getting some decent sleep. Now if only I could keep my 3 year old from waking up every night looking for me! :-) Thanks everyone!

By the end of week one my son could hold up his head on his own, a real strong boy.

You have to let him grow and develop in his own time. If he managed to roll himself over once, I can guarantee you he will do it again. Let him. It is part of him growing. Don't worry so much be confident and proud of the milestone reached so soon. When he can roll on his own, he will be fine. Just be certain there aren't an abundance of pillows and blankets in the crib but he will learn to deal with those things too. Covers on or off, things arranged just the way he prefers for his crib.

My son was rolling over that early, too...maybe even earlier. Soon thereafter, he was rolling both ways almost every time we put him down. The doctor told us if he can roll to his belly, he's ok to stay that way. I was nervous at first, too. But you can't stay awake all night to flip him back over when he does turn.

Hi L.,

I would take out any plankets and toys you may have near him in the crib if any. Also remove any bumpers you may have. He can turn into it. I rather had a little bump then have him put his face in it accidently. And just keep in a one piece pajama. This is really soon for him. This is all I could think of, I hope you can more from the other moms. Wish I could of helped more. Good Luck! :)

That is really early to start rolling over, but the previous poster is right, if he can roll over he should have enough control to turn his head so suffocation isn't an issue.

Regardless of that fact, if I were in your shoes I'd still be worried. Speak to your pediatrician about getting an infant positioner. Its a wedge that has cushioned sides and should keep the baby from rolling over.

Good luck and congratulations on such an advanced baby!

Usually once they start turning over like that, they will be able to control their neck muscles enough to not let themselves suffocate when on their tummies, but I remember panicking about the same thing! My son was rolling over early as well around that age.

My oldest daughter did that when she was just 6 weeks old. To keep her on her back in her crib we continued to use the wedges (one against each side of her from the armpits down that are designed to help prevent SIDS (spelling?).

Although she was pretty vocal about not being able to move around, she got used to it! Good Luck!

I am the mom of 2 teenagers and both of my children wriggled themselves from back to tummy from 1 week old. I know with all the SIDS warnings this can be scary, but walk around any intensive care unit in the hospital and most of the babies are on their tummies, because that's the natural and most comfortable position. Fighting to keep him on his back may lead to many sleepless nights, talk to your pediatrician, and make sure there are no extra blankets or pillows that he's can get to and that the mattress is taught.

L.,

My son (who will be 4 years tomorrow) rolled early too. On the day he turned 8 weeks old he rolled over from his stomach to his back. At first I thought it was a fluke, but I put him on his stomach and his did it again. That night I placed his on his back to sleep and in the morning when he woke he was on his stomach. I worried as did you about SIDS, so I called the pediatrician and he said is he can roll he is ok to sleep either way. Just place his on his back and if he rolls, he rolls. Hope this makes you feel better. All the best to you and yours.

I know what you're talking about!! It's nerve-wrecking. So, someone told me about hose wedges and she loaned it to me and it worked out great! He didn't like it much in the beginning, but I couldn't bear the thought of him rolling over and suffocating.
If you can get those wedges things and you'll be happier about it.
Let us know how it went.

Hi,

I just want to add the comment that you should never leave him alone on a surface like a bed, event a king size! It happened once right after my son started to roll over that he got from one end of the bed to the other and fell off.
wow, I had no idea he was that determined, he was not a strong baby!

All the best!
