I am planning to drive with my two teen girls to San Diego so we can visit my brother for Christmas. Does anyone have any route suggestions or travel tips? Also, any cool stops along the way would be nice.

What can I do next?

We moved here from San Diego about three years ago, and make the trip back about once a year to visit family. It's about 24 hours road time, the first day entirely still in Texas, and unless you get off your main course there is not much to see. I'm talking about the southern route, (I20 to I10 to the 8). It's pretty straight and easy, but not much to look at. West Texas can be pretty desolate. The desert before you get into San Diego looks pretty neat, my friend calls it the place where God dropped rocks. I think the I40 route may be more scenic, but I'd be concerned about weather/road conditions that time of year. It's a treck, but we do it with four kids in tow every year so it can be enjoyable. It's an adventure.

Roadside America is a great website that list off the wall attractions. I use it when I plan every vacation along with web searches of my planned route.

The web site is http://www.roadsideamerica.com. Have fun!

Hi! I have done that trip twice now. Once from San Diego and the second time to Orange County. The most direct way to San Diego is I10 to I20 to the 8. Its a lot of desert but easy drive.
The other way through New Mexico/Arizona/ etc. is a beautiful way to go but for San Diego it may take a little longer since you come from up North instead of right into San Diego. If you have AAA either insurance or a member you can set a tripTix and they map it out for you. It free. You can put one together online as well. It maps out everything you will be passing and fun things to do along the way. Pretty awesome. You may want to check that out.
Have fun!!!!

Stay south to stay out of the large mountain range! I used to live in Colorado, and it is no joke driving through them - ESPECIALLY in December!

Stay away from large mountain ranges!

When we took to San Diego several years ago, we went to carlsbad caverns, past the white sands then to San Diego. We took the top portion on the way home, Grand Canyon, Albuquerque. It was great to see a diffrent parts of the states. Have fun.

Carlsbad Caverns and Tombstone, Arizona (if that second one is still around).....it was the great shoot out between Doc Holiday, Wyatt Earp......Western Town. If your girls would like that.

If you travel I40 through New Mexico, we have an awesome Dinosaur Museum in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Old Route 66 goes right through town, so it is the way many people have gone to California. Amazing museum for such a small town.
