Roaches Ugh..

we moved into an apartment. Nice apartment that we actually pay more then normal for because its so nice. It has everything we wanted, needed, and its close to work. We applied and got it. Then i did some research, and read two posting from two years ago about roaches. I FREAKED OUT!!! thats my fear. Like i can deal with anything else but roaches.. i thought by us paying more we would avoid that as an issue. Well I immediately called to speak to the office manager about it. Making sure this isnt an on going issue he assured me it isnt. Mentioned the on going contract they have with terminex to resolve any problems. I felt better.

We move in, on our moving day my sister in law finds a dead one in the bathroom drawer. I FREAK, stomp over to the office and again speak to the manager. He again assures me they treat on a regular basis, and that right before move in they treat every apartment. said they just treated 3 days prior so we may find some bugs. That was the only one we found and we have been there a month. Today I get a call from the manager saying they gave the terminex guythe wrong key to an apartment who they were treating (because they have someone moving in) and accidentaly treated my place. I wasn't upset because I got an extra treatment!

Should I be mad? Should I worry. I'm really freaking out because I dont want to deal with bugs. I havent seen any since the dead one but i am worried they are there. I do everything i can never leaving food out, keeping everything clean as can be.. I'm just counting down the days we move.. 11 months!!

What can I do next?

Was it a little roach (German cockroach) or one of those big water bugs (American cockroach)? The big ones are really an issue. There are rarely infestations of those. They wander in from time to time. The little ones can multiply like crazy. As long as there is regular treatment, then you shouldn't ever have to worry about an infestation. I agree with the other posters though- it's just life in an apartment complex. Close up any crevices you find, and for the ones you can't, put boric acid in the cracks. It does work very effectively.

Please....apartments have roaches, that is a fact. They go from one apartment to the next when the bug man comes. That is fact. They just hide in some places better than others.

Go to the store and buy some Boric Acid Powder and squirt it behind the appliances and under the sink, behind the drawers, etc...everywhere there is a crevice or opening. That should take care of any issue of roaches.

I have had them so bad that watching "Welcome To Joe's Apartment" was like a homecoming. I had bought a plant at TG&Y and then ended up having emergency knee surgery from a softball injury. I had left the plant sitting on my coffee table and when I came home the whole place was infested. The bug man came month after month after month. I could get up in the middle of the night and flip on the light. It was like the floor had been painted dark there were so many roaches.....it was disgusting. Finally the bug man came back and he talked to me, asked me thoughtful questions...where did I see the most bugs, did I think they had a nest somewhere in particular, good questions. I told him I felt like they were around the coffee table the most. He got his bug spray tank and had me go out on the landing. He sprayed the exposed sides and top of the coffee table then flipped it up and OH MY STARS!!!! there was a huge nest. He saturated it and that month all my bugs died. I did not have roaches ever again. But I did also use the Boric Acid Powder all the time too.

Roaches happen. They can't be helped especially in apartment situations where they can hide in the walls and go to a different apartment when one is sprayed and the ones around it are not.

Every apartment has bugs to some extent. Heck I am sure there are some living in my home somewhere though they never come out to play.

Just relax.

Calm down, seriously. We had roaches thanks to some neighbors in our last townhouse apartment and some hitch-hiked to our new house. It took us a while, but Terminix really did get rid of the little effers.

No contact paper. They eat the glue. No grease drops. They eat the grease. Move the stove out occasionally if you can to vacuum and wash dripped grease. If you see little black coffee-ground-like granules, those are roach eggs. Those have to be scoured and indicate that you would need another treatment in between the scheduled treatments.

Should you be mad? That's like being mad at the wind. I wouldn't move over something like this unless it were part of a bigger problem AND your landlord weren't taking care of the problem/s. Since you haven't seen anything except dead bugs, that means the treatments are working.

I have lived in lots of apartments and I can tell you that anytime you get lots of people living that close to each other you will have roaches. Im sorry. They are gross and I hate them. But sadly they are unavoidable. Just make sure you ask the complex to spray your apartment everytime they treat and that should keep them few & far between. Good luck

ugh i feel your pain. i hate roaches. the suckers never die!! i've heard boric acid is a great way to treat them. google it if you want some extra protection but the fact that you haven't seen them in a month is a good sign. i've lived in places where everytime you turned on the light in the middle of the night, i would see over 10 roaches scampering for cover. yes. that traumatized me. now whenever i'm looking for a place to rent, i check out apartmentratings.com and pore over the reviews for any mention of bugs. lol. good luck!

We had a huge problem with ants a few years ago in our house -- literally every morning I woke up, I'd find thousands of ants swarming around a new area of our kitchen, bathroom, or eating area. I tried Boric Acid, liquid dish soap, etc in the crevices. But every morning a new bunch came from a new crevice I didn't know existed. So I finally called Terminex. They sprayed inside and out, then came every 3 months to renew the barrier around the outside. And them coming every 3 months is a contract -- so any time you see a bug between treatments, you call them and they come back out to take care of it for free. I tell you all this because I bet the deal your landlord has with Terminex is the same -- I'd ask the landlord, so then anytime you see even one bug you can call Terminex and they can come re-spray for free. This absolutely worked for us. There was a huge ant nest below our sub-floor and Terminex was able to get rid of all of 'em. Good luck!

go to myownpestcontol.com and just spray yourself. you can control how strong or weak you want the mix. take the kids for the day have hubby spray everywhere inside and out, its the stuff the pros use. Once it dries you have no worries. I used it for those japanese lady bug things and have not had to spray in the house I spray outside twice a year and those suckers die before they can make it into the house. Be sure he gets behind the fridge and stove really well. be pro active if you have concern. also under the sinks. gl

LuvMySons,

I would not worry too much unless you see them in your place. Keep a lookout (ie look under things, behind pics, all that ) and all should be fine.

Jessica.. that coffee grounds looking stuff... are you sure that is their eggs? I thought it was their poop. We had them REAAALLLLY bad when I was a kid... think Joe's Apartment bad... That stuff was behind every picture, the corner of cabinets, under appliances etc etc.. *gag*

When we lived in apartments, there were roaches everywhere even though they sprayed for them. In one place, they were in the digital display of the microwave and inside the answering machine. In another apartment, roaches were under the carpet, behind the kitchen cupboards, and probably in the walls. The pest control would work with us, if we cleared out the kitchen cupboards they would spray more. We did not get our deposit back because when they took out the carpet and cupboards to remodel, there were roaches. Our mistake was not having written proof that we repeatedly asked them to spray.
We had no more problems after moving to a new house. Which proved to me the apartment roaches were not my fault. We didn't bring any of the old cardboard boxes inside, and had a barrier sprayed around base of the walls inside and outside.

Roaches are icky, creepy, gross! That being said we, once upon a time had a severe roach problem that unfortunately moved with us to three homes after that HORRID apartment complex. We tried the Raid bombs, other sprays, thoroughly cleaning everything FREQUENTLY and NOTHING worked until we bought boric acid. We put it everywhere-under the sink around all the baseboards, behind the stove the back edge of our cabinets, in our dressers (not the drawers), behind the outlet/switch-plate covers,etc... within 6 weeks we never saw another roach and have been roach free ever since (about 8 years) I do have to say though that just recently we have seen a few baby roaches in our bathroom and I can't for the life of me figure out where they are coming from. We've lived in our current house for two years and this is the first I have seen them...We haven't brought anything new to us into the house so I don't know what the deal is. Guess I just need to keep an eye out.
Good luck and try not worry too much. Don't be complacent though....you don't want a serious infestation to take hold because they can be very difficult to get rid of.
