Hello Moms,
I recently bought rice milk for the first time to add to our choices of beverages in our home. I am NOT replacing regular milk just providing more choices to my daughter. I noticed on the side of the carton that it says for children under 5 consult your child's doctor. Can anyone tell me why this is on there? Is there something dangerous about rice milk or is it suggesting to check with a doctor before changing to rice milk exclusively? Any insight would be great. Thanks ladies

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies! I figured that it was something like that! She only has it a couple times per week and still has milk on those days so I think we should be ok!! I appreciate the help.

Hi A.,

Rice milk is primarily carbs, simple ones, where cow's milk is primarily protein. It is perfectly safe in limited portions but it is a high glycemic drink so it can cause insulin resistance just like sugar.

Don't know why there is a warning label but it is probably because it is not high in fat and little ones need healthy ones. Just a guess....

I agree with Courteny G., I think they just don't want people to think that rice milk is a substitute for either human milk, cow milk or formula as all of those have more lipids in them for neurological development.

No but, if it's fortified rice milk, that may be standard language that they have to put on the carton because of all the added extras beyond just the rice milk. Rice cereal is the first foods that are introduced to children when they first start eating solids because it is the least allergenic food and rice milk is just rice and water so I think that rice milk in and of itself should be just fine for children to drink.

We used to make rice milk ourselves when my older kids were little. It helped them go to the bathroom. That could be why. My husband grew up in Mexico and they used a lot of homemade remedies since they were more in the country than one of the bigger cities. It could affect different kids different ways.

Rice milk is good in terms of allergies. I would imagine it is related to the lack of fats for brain development in case people switch to rice milk exclusively. Just guess though. FYI: on the advice of an allergist we switched to rice milk with my son and had to ensure he had three tablespoons of oil each day to make up for the lost fat, so do be sure to replace it for your little ones if they start drinking lot of the rice milk. We added olive oil to applesauce (gross! but he liked it!) and butter to everything we could.

Hi A.!
My son(now eight and a half) has been on ENRICHED rice milk since he was 2 due to a casein (milk protein)allergy on the advise of his allergist and he's been fine...We were advised to use enriched versus regular since the enriched had all the added vitamins ,protein and calcium so that it would be fairly nutritionally comprable to the cow's milk (not sure about the lipids). But he's fine and developmentally on track (ahead of his age level in reading and math and also ahead of his classmates in cello) Hope this helps. Good luck

My son has been drinking Rice Milk since he was one because of food allergies. There is nothing harmful in it. It is labeled that way because it isn't equal nutritionally to milk, so it shouldn't be a replacement i.e..There isn't enough fat in it for their developing brains. Although, I am aware that at age two children can drink skim milk anyway. I'm not sure what other reasons it is labeled as such. The enriched Rice Milk has vitamins and plenty of calcium. I would check with her pedi anyway to make sure she is getting everything she needs nutritionally aside.

The real reason for the warning on the box is that there are low levels of arsenic in rice milk. It is not a because of the substitution for other milk issue, as far as I know. With allergies, it is clearly a pro and con issue, but if you're just trying to give your family another option for beverages, I would definitely check with your pediatrician.

Check out the ingredients in google.com. Also did you know that the U.S.A. Beef and Milk have been banned outside of the U.S.A. Reason: It contains hormones and antibiotics. You should be giving your child ORGANIC milk. Young girls develop breasts very early on because of these horrible things placed in our milk and our beef. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL. One of the reasons that our antibiotics do not work well any more because of over use.
To ovoid this always buy kosher meat and chicken which do not contain antibiotics and hormones. More expensive however they taste much better. You'll notice the difference. The difference is amazing.
