I had the rhogam shot at 6 weeks and 28 weeks pregnant. After my baby was born I never got another shot. Could not getting the shot after delivery prevent me from getting pregnant in the future.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! That was really helpful. I will ask the pediatrician what his blood type was. I was just worried that not having the shot may contribute to me not being able to get pregnant in the future! Great answers!

What is your new babies blood type is it also RH- if so you did not have to get the shot. It's only if the baby is RH+ that you need the shot, the two you got at 6 wks and 28wks were preventative just in case the baby was RH + I would check on that. Otherwise getting pregnant in the future either way shouldn't be a problem. Not getting the shot doesn't make getting pregnant any harder it just effects whether or not your body produces the bad antibodies.

From my own experience.... My first child was RH + so there was an additional shot given to me after his birth. My second child (a set of twins) were both RH neg , like me, so I only had the one shot during pregnancy.

The second shot is not needed, probably because your baby is RH neg. In this case you did not form any RH + antibodies while you were pregnant. The hospital should have tested the baby's blood when he was born, and that is why you didn't get the shot.

If you want to have a little more peace of mind, ask the pediatrician on your next visit to see if this is the case.

I know that my daughter gets the Rhogam shot as well. I believe it lasts for 3mos. at a time. So keep track of the date that you received it and have another at your due time. Without it pregnancy could happen quite quickly. The only thing right now is for you is to go and get that Rhogam shot, I'm actually surprised that they gave you a Rhogam shot during your pregnancy. Anyways if you have reached your 12wks its time for another or if you wish another little one.
Good luck!!

No, the RhoGam shot it to keep or minimize your body's forming antibodies that could possible harm your child. Your baby was probably
RH neg. so you did not need an additional shot after he/she was born.
You should have no difficulty in getting pregnant again as a result of the shot.

Did your child have a positive or negative blood type? If your child was negative you would not need the second shot. The first is given as a preventative should the child you are carrying be positive, if the child is negative then there is no reason for the second shot. Getting or not getting the shot will not affect your ability to get pregnant, however, if you have a negative blood type and your husband has a positive blood type AND you have developed antibodies it could affect any future children you have with a positive blood type.
Talk to your doctor.

I would call your OB and ask about it. However, I believe I didn't get mine after delivery b/c my son's blood type is negative also. Could be wrong, but definitely worth looking into.
