Hello,
So a year ago I miscarried at 5 weeks. A week after bleeding from the miscarriage the doctor gave me the RH shot because I'm rh negative and my boyfriend has a positive blood type. Therefore our baby would be positive. My question is, my boyfriend and I are trying to concieve again so does that mean I need to get another RH shot before or do I get it once I know I am pregnant? I'm so lost, I want to make the right decision. Someone help.

What can I do next?

Sorry to hear that you miscarried!
When I got my miscarriage I didn't know I was a Rh factor until they tested my blood. My husband is + and I am - so with my daughter I got the shot in the middle of my pregnancy but after she was born I didn't have to get it because she was - but when I had my boys I got the shot in the middle of the pregnancy and afterwards because they were +. It is not a big deal anymore! Good Luck! I hope this helped.

Rh injections are given around the 28th week of pregnancy or after a miscarriage is diagnosed to prevent antibody formation should your blood come in contact with the baby's blood. There's nothing you need to receive or do before you plan your next pregnancy. Nurse Midwife Mom

Hi M.,
I am Rh- and my husband is Rh+. Some of my children are + and some are -. You don't know until you test their blood. I don't get the rhogam until I know if I need it. It contains mercury, which is dangerous for you and your baby. You definitely don't need it before you are pregnant. The only time you would actually need it is if your blood and the baby's blood mingle, which is very uncommon. And, then, if I feel I need it, I pay for the type of rhogam which is mercury free. It is hard to get sometimes, and your insurance probably won't pay for it. You will need to order it early because they won't have it on hand. I think protocol is to have rhogam at 16 weeks and after delivery. Overkill.

UPDATE: I just read Rachel C's response that they do it at 28 weeks. That sounds right. I couldn't remember the exact time of the first one since I don't do it then.

Just because your bf's blood type is positive that does not mean your baby will have positive blood (the baby could have negative blood like you), but there is the chance and thats why they give the rhogam shot with any type of bleeding, at 28 weeks, and after birth so your body does not build up antibodies that could harm future pregnancies. And they will recheck your blood type every time you are preggers just to really make sure your negative over and over, lol... seems sort of redundant. Not a big deal, better to get the shot than not. :)

Your ok, you'll only need the shot after deliveries or miscarriages -- and maybe after any episodes of bleeding. I bled at 16 weeks and got an RH shot then too, but when I researched it it seemed medical opinion is pretty divided on whether it's neccessary after bleeding....(of course that was 3+ years ago and there may have been new research)

You need it after you become pregnant. I can't remember exactly, but it's right around the 26-28 mark and then again at or right after delivery. It is extremely important that you get this medication for the health of this baby and the health of any future babies. Good luck!

You will need the shot during pregnancy and then right after if the baby is positive. They should check the babys blood type.I am A- and have had to get it after every pregnancy due to me having O positive children. Had they been negatives I would not have needed it.

No. The Rhogam shot is generally given before delivery at 28 weeks and then again after delivery. If you have any bleeding episodes, you may be given a shot them as well. With my son I received three shots because of bleeding. With my daughter, only two. I was also given one after a miscarriage.

I am RH neg and have bleed during my last 2 pregnancys. With the last they gave me the RH shot at 13 weeks and again at 28 weeks. And of course after birth if the baby is RH pos.
I am pregnant again and has some bleeding and had the rogram shot at 15 weeks and havent bleed again. I know my issues are different than yours but I asked for the shot early to ease my mind and they gave it to me. I wouldnt have the shot until your pregnant but talk to your OBGYN.
Wanted to add that because your neg and he is pos it doesnt mean that every baby will be RH pos.
good luck
