Returning Fruit

Has anyone returned fruit to a grocery store just because it didn't taste as good as it should. I bought some clementines the other day. They are always sweet and juicy and they tasted horrible. I hate throwing away a whole bag of fruit and wasting money but my family won't eat them.

What can I do next?

Absolutely! I have taken bread that molded in a day back, I have taken cherry tomatoes where once opened the contaier half where shriveled. With the cost of groceries, I see no reason store would not let you take them back! :) I always weigh out how much it cost and how wasteful it will be to toss it!

Definitely take it back. I've taken dairy products back without any problem. If you go at the right time, you see that the grocery stores don't really take care of the perishables the way you'd like to think they do. I'd be surprised if they even questioned you. You shouldn't even need a receipt.

I wouldn't hesitate. It may feel weird to return fruit, but I have returned many food items that were not what I paid for. Once I cut a sweet potato and tiny worms crawled out!! You can bet I returned that - I thought they should know that is what was going on with their sweet potatos.

It all depends upon how much it is worth to you. That sweet potato was worth pennies, I am sure, but I was going to the store anyhow, and I thought they should know about something so unusual. Otherwise, maybe I wouldn't have made the effort. Just depends upon whether the cost of the purchase balances out with the hassle factor of returning the item. But on principle, you should feel fine about returning merchandise that is subpar, even if it is food.

Absolutely. I have returned clementines because of that exact problem. When I did, the cust svc person said they'd gotten a lot of returns of clementines and it must have been a bad shipment. So go ahead and take them back.

My sister works for customer service at WalMart and says that they had a batch of clementines that were supposed to be seedless. There were a ton of peeople who returned them because they were intended for their small children. I would imagine you should have no trouble returning them :o)

I returned a whole bag of grapefruit to Sams because they got moldy the next day. Just tell them they taste rotten and you would like to just get some replacements...

I learned about an organic fruit and veggie delivery company we just started using last week from another Mamasource thread. We got our 1st delivery yesterday and everything looked great. I think it's pretty reasonable for the cost and we're hoping it makes us eat better.

It's called Door to Door Organics - http://colorado.doortodoororganics.com//index.php

May be something to check out if you're trying to eat lots of fruits and veggies.

I agree with everyone else to return them.

And a little helpful tip. I'm a bit of a clementine fanatic, and I've been really disappointed with the California "Cutie" clementines that have been available for the last few years. And I've tried them from Chile, and they were OK, but not great.

But if you get a chance to get Spanish clementines, pay the extra $$ for them. They are harder to find now that the California ones are available, but they are soooo sweet and smell wonderful. There is absolutely no comparison!

Think of it this way...

If you went to a restuartant and the food was horrible you would send it back to the kitchen. Same thing at the grocery store. You purchased food that you expected to be a certain quality and if it didnt meet that quality you expected. You should definitely take it back and dont feel bad about it either.

Yes, I returned clementiens about a month ago to Costco. For the same reason. They took back without a question.

I returned clementines about a month ago that I had purchased from Target. They tasted bad also. They didn't even question me. When I told the lady, she said they had had some problems with the clementines.

My dad use to return fruit all the time. He'd return cantelope or watermelon that had been cut open if it didn't have a good taste.

I returned a bag of tasteless, dry clementines to Costco a couple of days ago---no hassle and I got my money back. I have also returned bad food to Smiths. Just go to the customer service desk and I am sure you will have no problem. Store managers want to keep customers happy.

King Soopers is good at taking fruit back. Sometimes I bring the bad fruit back, other times - just the container - too gross to bring back. Think most stores would not give you a problem.

Yes, absolutely. I've taken pomegranates and other fruits and vegetables back. You pay good money for fresh fruits and vegetables and you should never be afraid to demand the quality you're paying for. If only everyone demanded that grocery stores honor their responsibility to provide high quality products, then we wouldn't have such a problem with needing to sift through everything...the overall quality would be readily better. Go for it...you have every right to!

That's a legitimate reason for returning the fruit. At my SWY, I don't even have to bring the food back, just tell them what was rotten and they refund me. They're so nice.
