We have had our Shi-tzu eight years who is leashed trained to daily walks and potties at designated dog walk area in our community. She is also my husbands shadow and is his devoted companion. We are senior citizens and our age is transforming our abilities to disabilities. My husband is no longer able to walk her and has considered giving her away, but both he and she would be totally at a loss without each other. Our daughter and son-in-law fenced in our patio and built a sand box which they filled with sand from the dog walk area that she was familiar with. She refused to use it and did her jobs in the house, which she has never done. We soaked up her pee with a papper towel and picked up her poop and placed both towel and poop in the sand box for her scent. She still doesn't get the message. She holds back as long as she possibly can (two days) the explodes wherever she is at the time. Once we left her out for an hour or two. She went on the patio floor, but not in the box. We have worked with her for two weeks now, without success. Are we going at it right, and are we expecting too much too soon? Frustrated, we are Lynn & L. B.

So What Happened?

FINALLY!!!
We discovered that what we lacked was pacients, pacients, pacients...
We started our training (retraining) Cloie, our little shi-tzu in Nov. Here we are in Feb., and she finally got the idea that we wanted her to potty in her sandbox. She won't go in and out the doggie door on her own but with a command she goes straight to her box and does her job. We are so proud of her. She sort of trained herself since it has been too cold for us to go outside and wait and wait and wait for her to figure out what we were trying to get her to do. We scolded her when she did her business any where but in her box, and extremely praised her with a treat when she did. Thanks for you comments and suggestions. It really helped us. We tried all your suggestions which finally worked. Happy, we are Lynn & L.

Have you ever used a command with her when you walked her? We taught our dog to go on command. It doesn't matter where she is. When we say "hurry up" she knows what it means and is her signal to potty.

Also, you may need to put the leash on your dog and walk her out onto the sand. Have you tried doing that, to see if it helps? When my dog is reluctant to go I put the leash on her and walk her in a circle, giving the command "hurry up". She continues to go around in a circle until she stops to go. Works every time. (walking stimulates the bowels, so that helps)

we have never walked our dog to go potty - she goes potty in the yard, and she takes walks around the neighborhood- two separate things. in fact i don't even carry poop bags when we walk - she doesn't do it then, we go before we leave. our phrase is always "go potty". lol. it works!

i would have rewarded her for going on the patio, at least. give her lots of praise and a doggie treat maybe. maybe that would be something that would be better than nothing.

Have you spoken to your vet? Female dogs in particular are often picky about where they go to do their business, and a vet or animal trainer may have some tips and tricks to convince your pup.

Talk to yor vet for suggestions. There are puppy pads that are for peeing on, like newspaper but absorbent. Perhaps if your patio doesn't have a finished floor something like this might work. It may be "outside" enough for the dog, but comfortable for you and hubby.

I found this article by googling "paper training older dog". http://www.ehow.com/how_###-###-####_paper-train-senior-d...
