Hi Mama's, My mother is retiring on November 1 after working as a nurse in a hospital for 42+ years. I have not been to a retirement party since I was a kid so have no idea what types of gifts are the “norm.” Do any of you have any thoughtful ideas for this milestone? I don't want to buy something to just buy something and have an object collect dust on a shelf but I want to give something that recognizes the occasion and that she will actually enjoy/use etc. Any ideas? When I think of retirement, I only think of a watch  I am stumped. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks All. With talk of luggage and experience etc, I decided to purchase an all inclusive trip for my parents to enjoy somewhere warm and sunny this Spring:-)

I like what Sheryl said about a kindle or nook. My mom loves hers. She can take it everywhere, read, relaex, browse the internet if she wants. We haver a great couple at work retiring and we are getting him and his wife tickets to an awesome bed and breakfast.

Instead of an item, how about an experience? Depending on you budget, anything from a long weekend getaway to a mom.daughter trip would be appreciated! If that's too much, a local getaway, a museum and lunch and maybe a book that she's been interested in reading, but just not the time? If she's a reader- a Kindle or Nook would be awesome! Anything to help her enjoy her new found free time!

What about a shadow box - inside you could put one of her scrubs, maybe her stethescope, a photo of her dressed as a nurse 40 years ago, a photo of her dressed as a nurse this year, her nametag. It'd be something she could hang on the wall or on the shelf and remember the days.

I don't know what your budget is but my husband takes up a collection at his job and they buy their retirees a rocking chair of some type. This last time it was an Amish built outdoor rocking chair and the 3 people that recieved them LOVED them. If your mom has a hobbie of some type that she will now have more time to spend on you could get her supplies for her hobbie. Maybe there is something she has always wanted to do and didn't have the time, you could get her a gift card for it. Like taking a cooking class or taking some type of music lesson. I hope this helps. Have a great day

Something that she plans to do in retirement...airline tickets, a kindle if she likes to read, something that goes along with how she wants to spend her time in retirement.

It depends on what she plans on doing. If it was me, luggage would be the ideal gift or something else having to do with traveling.

Great idea Denise P

Good luck to you and yours
