Retirement Age for You?

When I just can't take it anymore, because I just can't take it anymore. :)

I was retired for 18 years. Yeah, say that instead of stay at home mom and you don't get the yawns. :)

I'm from the generation that created the mantra "Freedom at 55"....but anyone I have met who has truly retired, their brains sort of go to mush.

So, I'm thinking my husband and I will honestly never retire, just cut back from full time, to part time, to consulting, to death do us part.

What is this "retirement" you speak of?

at this point....death. :)

the 1st years of our marriage were great. Bought our 1st home, etc.

the next 20 were challenging beyond belief: 15 straight years of medical expenses. 1st with the birth/loss of our daughter & her 2 heart surgeries. 4 months after her death, our older son was diagnosed with a degenerative hip disease. 3 surgeries + a multitude of equipment thru his childhood, culminating in his 1st hip replacement at age 23. For me, this was part of my Bucket List....so !!goal achieved!!

Now we're in a position where we are still carrying him financially as he struggles to find his place in the world + prepping for our youger son's college years + trying to play catch-up with our home maintenance which is seriously overdue. (sigh)

But we are in a happy place.....so following the words of my Life Song "Simple Man".....we're okay & what happens....happens when it comes to retirement.

I'm not sure.........but my husband and I want to live in an RV and travel around the country to all of the State and National Parks and work odd jobs for awhile - it would be like partial retirement.

54. That is when I will be able to retire with full benefits. I'm a teacher, and I love it, but I will be ready to do something else when I'm 54 I think. I'm 42 now, and my husband is almost 50. The plan is for both of us to retire when I'm 54 and he's 61 or 62. I'm sure we'll both want to work doing other things, but we'll want less demanding jobs. I would love to work in a nursery - a plant nursery, not a baby nursery :). Maybe we'll do volunteer work instead. We should be financially stable based on our plan.

Nevah. I plan to die in harness! Hopefully in triple digits, though.

I retired at age 26. I got laid off and decided that I was just done working. We plan for my husband to financially be able to retire at age 45. However, depending on where he is in his career and how much he likes his job, he may opt to continue working for another 5 years or so.

Would be nice to retire at 50 and have the energy to travel the world. Don't think we will be financially set at that age but i think if we could find a part time job consulting we can do it. Would be nice!

My projected retirement date has always been 2027 (when I'm 65).
Retirement is not mandatory, so I might stay on till my benefits max out (somewhere between 67 and 72).
I'm a few years older than my husband and I'm not sure when he wants to retire.
He likes having something to do and people to talk to.
I've known so many people who left jobs they loved then got bored with the golf course within a year or two.
They went back to work as contractors but a very few dropped dead from heart attacks.
It's like the work was keeping them alive.

I can't see us ever retiring.... cutting back some... yeah, we are doing a bit of that now but we won't take any of our retirement savings out until we have to. We will continue to invest even though we are cutting back a bit on the travel for work, etc.

Not that we can't retire financially, but we built and grew this company on our own with no help and as long as we still have the drive and motivation to keep it going we will unless... some partner group wants to buy us out which we have already been approached.

We are just not the type to not have something productive to work on. There is always something to do and we prefer to stay engaged with the business mindset.

We also believe in setting the example for our daughter regarding drive, self motivation and what it takes to be successful in this world.

Probably never. Especially if my husband does retire. 24/7 with him is incentive to keep working.

I wanted to retire at 30.
I finally retired at 59 . . . because I couldn't work any more.
The water district where I live raised our water rates 30% for the smallest users up to almost 300% for the biggest users and were arrogant about doing it. So I ran for the water board and won. So now I will work for the water district until I'm 65. Its a great part time job.

Why did I want to retire? So I could spend more time with my wife and kids. My wife and I love to travel.

Maybe in three years at 68. But I can stay as long as I want at the job. Hubby retired due to medical issues and has finally adjusted to being at home.

We have traveled half way around the world while he was in the military and lived in several countries. Of course there is still Greece, Italy and a few states here to see.

The kids are grown and on their own. We might move to a warm climate due to aches and pains and not wanting to feel cool or cold. But it depends on if we sell the house or stay in it for another 10 years and hubby's health. I hope to open a side business of making children specialty clothing.

Other than that life is good and we are enjoying being together after all the years we were more apart than together. Kind of like dating all over again.

I will always stay busy doing something, can't stand to not have something to do. So even at 80 I hope to be doing something for my community and family.

We are planning on age 60. We are on track for that at the moment.

125-it will take that long to get out of the children's education debt.

I don't think I will retire. I am still working on my B.S. in my mid thirties and I want to get a PhD after that... I will be in school way into my 40's...
I picked an area that I LOVE and if I can find employment in it after school I think I will enjoy working in my field until I can no longer work.

Since I'm finishing my PhD at age 52, I'm planning to work, in some capacity, until I physically can't. By gaining education and credentials, I hope to have more opportunity and options as to what that work looks like. Work is rewarding and gives a purpose to life. I have no desire to "travel the world" or drive around the country in an RV. I love where I live and I enjoy life right now!

Around 70.

We will have more than enough money by then to maintain our life style and to travel. I want to make sure that when we retire, we have more than enough. If for some reason our accounts do really well, we may retire at 65.

We should live into our 90s, so that still gives us 20 years of retirement.

I'm not sure DH or I will ever really retire. He's self employed and plans to work full time until he's 60 or 65 and then part time (whenever he feels like it) until he's about 70. I work for a company that doesn't offer a pension so no incentive to stay to a particular age. Right now the plan is that I'll probably stop working in the next two years and open my own business part time. I'll be 40. If I do that I'll probably continue to work part time until I'm 60ish. DH is 9 years older than I am. By the time I'm 60 he'll be 69 and maybe we'll be ready to not work. Who knows! That's 22 years away.

I'm thinking early 60's. Let's see what happens with interest rates.

Somewhere between 65 and 70. I'd love to retire at 60, but I wouldn't have enough money. I have to be at my job 25 years to qualify for a decent level of pension, so that would put me at 65 but I still may not be able to support myself decently for 20 years or more at that age. Depends on the status of social security, my marital status, sale of my house, whether the inlaws are alive or dead, etc.

We had hoped to retire at 55, so we'd be young enough to still be in good health to travel and enjoy life. Our parents retired at 55.

However, our retirement savings was cut in half in the downturn, so more realistically, we're looking at early 60s now. Our financial planner is targeting our retirement planning for 62.
