hey moms! 2 rooms in our house have really old 1980s air conditioners in them that no longer work. my husband is not handy so he is of no use.

has anyone ever replaced one of these? do i go through a handyman or do i go through a PC Richard or Home Depot? OR do i just remove them and close up the holes in the walls?

thanks for any advice!

***they are wall units, not window units

What can I do next?

We have wall unit air conditioners and have had to replace them. What you need to do is measure the opening by either removing the original ac or measuring the size of the ac as well as the opening and purchasing another one of the same size. It really isn't a big deal or job, the hard part is when you have one that is at the ceiling like the one we have in our dining room, in which case you will need a couple of strong guys. My husband stuffs foam around the outside and seals the inside with caulking just to keep down on drafts. If you have any questions let me know.

J.:

Go to Angie's List and find reputable AC person/company and get price quotes.

If you have window units and your husband is NOT handy - have someone else do it. I personally wouldn't get rid of them...I would keep them as there are times when the heat and humidity just suck...

GOOD LUCK!!!

If they are just wall units, measure them and go to who ever sells them and buy the new ones. My sons girlfriend just changed out her moms, she posted it on youtube for all to see. She was very proud to do it herself. If you have enough tomboy in ya to take on the challenge I bet it's not that hard. Otherwise just hire a handyman to do the installation. Key is measuring to make sure the existing hole is about the same size as the new unit's gonna be.
If you are removing them permanently you will need someone who can drywall up the holes for ya, it should be very expensive. Easy fix really.

Are they window units? We have those in our house, and you can buy a new one at any appliance/home store. Just be careful when you take them out..a lot of times they're back-heavy and can fall right out the window if you don't hold on to them! We usually take ours out and seal up the windows before the winter..it really helps keep the heat in.

Hire someone, it will be money well spent. A reputable handyman may be a little cheaper, and I'm sure you could line up a few projcts around the house for him to do while he is there.
