Hello,

I am in the process of replacing an old, constantly running toilet. I have been reading reviews online of a few but they dont answer some questions that I have. My water bill this month was about $40 higher than my average and Im sure its because of this toilet. I hate toilets more than anything in a house. So, I want to know what toilets are easiest to keep clean and have a good flush, quiet and dont use a ton of water to do the job. I want to replace the upstairs toilet in the future because it gets dirty after every 2 flushes!! I lift up the toilet seat and can see dripplets of urine. I think its so discusting and I dont want my 4 year old son touching that everytime he has to lift the seat go pee. (Hes used to using toilet paper to left the seat now.) I always check other peoples toilets when I use them and I swear its only my toilet that has this problem. Ok, so thats my dilemma. Thanks for your input ladies. And I hope everyones having a great Thanksgiving today!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your input, ladies! So I removed and installed a new toilet in my half bath (with the help of youtube!). It was constantly running and my water bill was out of conttrol. I opted for a Kohler because of all the great reviews and because I dont want to have to replace a 'cheaper' model in a year. So I figured it would be a safe purchase. SO far I love my new toilet and cant get over how clean it has managed to stay these last few days. I check it everytime we use it. lol. Its clean! Yes, my son has been making a mess but we are working on this. lol. But no pee under the seat!! Which was my major pet-peeve because my son lifts the toilet up everytime he goes potty. Now I have to replace the toilet upstairs, which I think has problems due to previous owners using harsh chemicals and scrubbing to get/keep it clean. Im looking into getting aother Kohler! A nicer one for our main bathroom, of course! lol.

Get a low water usage toilet with a #1 and #2 flush.
As for "keeping it clean" -- I think it will be the same as any toilet.

If there's always a little pee under the seat, maybe your seal is broke under the toilet which would put it at a slight incline. IDK...just a thought but if your bill is that high, it's probably time for a new one anyway. I really wish there was a retail store that had all of the toilets set up to existing plumbing that a customer could actually go and flush them to see for themselves. We just replaced our toilet two years ago. It was 'spose to be one of those ultra low flush toilets but you only need to flush once. We had it professionally installed and it worked great for the first year. Now we have to hold the handle down and sometimes flush twice.

If your water bill is higher, I'd suspect that either they have raised your rates or that you have a leak somewhere.
Seeing drops of urine when you lift the toilet seat isn't typically the fault of the toilet, it's the fault of the pee-er, a male one. You can't get a toilet that fixes this problem.
I have a friend who said this after doing toilet replacements in her house, "What's the difference between a $60 toilet and a $600 toilet? The $60 toilet works)"
Good luck

You might want to check the floor boards to ensure there isn't a leak by the seal as well...

The newer toilets are low water usage - however, they don't have the power to flush stuff down so sometimes you have to flush twice to get the stuff to go down - not a savings in my eyes.

Pee on the underside of the seat is typical if the boys pee hard or close to the water - it splashes up and most boys don't notice it.

hope that helps! had a great Thanksgiving thanks! Hope you had one too!!

If you see droplets of urine when you lift the seat, it may not be a problem with the toilet. I would bet the problem is more that your 4 year old has very bad aim. Which is normal for a 4 year old! Even with them standing directly in front of the toilet and with the seat up they have been known to miss the toilet completely. Getting a new toilet is not going to solve this problem.

On the other hand, if the toilet is constantly running, you may want to replace the toilet or at least all the working parts inside the tank. Go to a store that sells them (Home Depot, Lowes, etc), tell the salesman what features you are looking for and I'm sure they will help you find one that fits your needs. They may even install it (for a price, of course).
