Repeated High Fevers in My 2 Year Old

Hi,

My daughter is just about to turn 2. She had pneumonia 2 times in the past 3 months. She recovered from last one about 10 days back. After that she had stomach flu after 3-4 days. In her recent follow up tests, we found her IGM is little high (129 as against expected range of 29-113).

Yesterday we went to a friend's place and after that she did not sleep well the whole last night. Since morning she had high fevers like 102.5. We gave her mortirin and fever went down to 100.5. Now after 7 hours (I know we are supposed to give it every 6 hours), her fever started rising and it was 105 just before. She seems normal otherwise. The nurse at Kaiser said, there is no emergency. But we are freaking out. Does anyone has any suggestions here?

Thanks everyone for your replies.

So we went to the doctor today and she could not find anything. Her lungs sounded clear, no ear infection, nothing. She seemed pretty much out of options. But since she is a doc, she suggested this. She said lets have another x-ray and see if there is an infection. Also she wants to get the urine test done to rule out any kidney infection or something. We gave her last round of mortrin at 6 am and so we were supposed to give her next round around 12. But its almost 2 now and we havent give her mortrin as her fever is like 99.8 - 99.5 range. According to doc, she might be a kind of person who gets high fevers easily. She says its a good thing as it shows her body is trying to fight disease. But still no one knows whats the disease. Last time when she had pneomonia, her xrays dint showed much but they still treated her for pneomonia as they suspected that it is one. We feel she has something going on inside her which is not getting diagnosed. We feel so bad that we did not opted to PPO plan this time. We could have taken her to Stanford.

Also Patty, Can you please suggest us some dietary supplements as you mentioned?

What can I do next?

I'm no expert, so just responding as a mom here.

If one of my children had those symptoms, I'd definitely be concerned. If the fever doesn't come down with treatment (Motrin), then I'd go to the ER.

No matter what, I'd be at the doctor's office first thing Monday. Your daughter needs support in returning to health, and she's susceptible to infections after her recent illnesses. One of my kids was in the hospital for a week with a severe asthma attack, and for years afterward, every cold turned into a major event.

Good luck!

I would go to another health care professional. A continued fever that is not going away is a sign of infection. It could be a deep inner ear one that medication didn't finish treating or another infection starting up.

A fever of 105 degrees is high enough to go to the ER in my opinion. But I would have already been to the ER if it had reached 102 and lasted this long.

105 is a big deal. I'd get to a doctor.

For future, consider getting your daughter on a good and reliable supplementation to help build her immunity. I can make suggestions if you like.

Epsom salt bath with warm water... warm water which is colder than hotter...

Soak at least 20 minutes... She may not like it because she is going to feel cold... I actually get in the bathtub with my son and let him lay on me while I pour water on him and keep him comfortable...

I don't know what Kaiser is...

if you can't do baths... use wash cloths with warm water... Light clothing and and light sheet/blanket... even if she complains she's cold... Shivering means her body if working to bring down the fever...

I hope this helps...

You've described 3 infections in the last 3 months. A fever indicates she still has an infection. The flu is a virus for which there is not treatment. I suggest that you calm yourself and accept that your daughter is fighting off another infection. Keep her reasonably warm but not too warm. The current thought is to not give them warm bath because it's too hard on the baby's system. It cools off the body too quickly.

My daughter had tonsillitis and her fever spiked around 104-106. I took her to the ER wrapped in her quilt. The first thing the nurse did was remove the quilt and cover her with a light weight blanket. Her fever went down to 103. The nurse said to never keep her covered more warmly than what she would be covered if she weren't ill because the extra covers traps in the body heat and causes the fever to go higher.

Having a fever is a good thing when one is ill. It means the body is fighting off the infection which is making us ill. We do want to control the fever. Give her the motrin when it's intended and don't wait for the fever to rise.

Continue treating her for the fever and wait out the infection. She will fight it off. Because she is getting sick this often I would look into ways to improve her immune system. Even at 2 she can take probiotics which may help. Talk with a nutritionist about ways to improve her diet so that her immune system will strengthen.

At the same time be aware that since she has been ill this often her immune system is naturally low and she will become ill more easily. Perhaps keep her away from crowds or people who have even a minor illness such as a cold or a light case of the flu.

Fevers are normal and are no reason to freak out. She will be fine.
