Repeat Ear Infections

My three old son has had four ear infections in the last month and a half. What makes this particularly frustrating is that he has had two sets of tubes put in as well as his tonsils and his adenoids out. This is ear infection number 26, to be exact. He seems to be immune to the antibiotics (which I despise giving him but do anyway) and the ear drops work for about a week. I have tried Mullein Garlic oil and other homeopathic remedies but nothing is working. I'm afraid that he may start to lose his hearing. I know I need to get his allergies tested...Dairy may be an attribute to all of this. Does anyone have any other advice or remedies that you have tried???

THANK YOU

Yes, completely cut out dairy, even cheeses, for several weeks and see if that doesn't work on it's own. 60% of ear infections are viral so antibiotics don't work, and in fact harm your child's overall balance in his system. Try heating olive oil and freshly pressed garlic until it just barely starts to bubble, then remove from heat, strain, and let cool until just warm. put drops in both ears (after letting it get down into each one) providing ear drums are not ruptured at the time. if they are, rub the oil around it, behind it, etc. You can also use breastmilk inside if you have a source for it! That is really helpful. If you do introduce dairy again, you may want to consider only raw milk. Regular milk is not only unneccessary for good bone health, but actually increases our calcium needs and is not good for the body, despite what the dairy industry would have us believe.
Also see a good chiropractor (dr. griffin- ###-###-#### on soledad canyon) who can make sure he is aligned well for drainage. He likely needs a good probiotic (Jarrow is a good brand) to rebuild his bacterial flora. open capsule and mix with applesauce. i'd also put him on a good fish oil supplement for kids (nordic natural strawberry).
oh, and i echo the sentiment to stay away from OTC meds, especially fever reducers! if his body isn't able to fight off the sickness, i.e., get a fever, than the virus, etc., will grow and become unmanageable. I won't consider medication unless my kids' get a fever of 104.5 after talking with naturopathic doctors that i know. fevers are good because it means the body is fighting to get better. our bodies know what to do to heal themselves and do best when left unmedicated or altered.
you poor traumatized dear! so sorry to hear you've had to go through all this....

hope this helps!

Hi,
It sounds like you're on the natural path, so this first suggestion may not be applicable, but I'll share this anyway.

Beware of over the counter cold medicines!
My son also had a lot of ear infections (not as many as yours!) when he was younger. He had a lot more after my ex and I separated, and it turned out that at the first sign of a cold or sniffle, that my ex would give him OTC cold remedies. The problem is that these cold remedies actually PROMOTE ear infection. What they do is slow down the movement of the fluids, which then get stagnant and grow infections.

As for the dairy, that would absolutely be a good thing to explore. Sensitivity to dairy can create congestion and excess mucous.

Another thing to explore would be soap sensitivity. For my son, it caused him to have so much nose congestion, that I had to suction his nose 5 times a day until I figured out the problem.

I guess sensitivities would be an avenue to explore in general, to find out if something is causing extra fluid to begin with.

My heart really goes out to you. I know how painful this is for the little ones, and how hard it is as a mom to see them going through this.
All the best to you and your son,
M.

Sorry to hear that. I can't give too much advice, sorry. But you should put him on a pro-biotic! you can get it from a heath food store, ie: henry's, mothers market....
Being on so many anti-biotics he has no good bacteria to fight these things off!! You could also try cutting out dairy, that almost always will be a culprit!
Like you said maybe you should get him allergy tested or at least get a new Dr. or another opinion?!
I'm sorry you have to go through this, :( Good Luck

My 10 mo old has had 2, this last one was a double. I elevated the matress at the head and I don't let her drink laying down. I also have been massaging her head, especially in front of her ears, it helps release the mucus and any fluid that may get trapped. If you feel from the top of the ear near the front, you will feel and indentation, start there and work down. massage your own head and ears area and you will feel what releases pressure in the ears. Also, under/behind the ear and neck line( the occipital ridge). Ask your Dr about possible food allergies.

My daughter is 2 1/2 and is having the same problem. She hasn't had tubes yet, but I'm starting to think about it. Her doctor always prescribes antibiotics, and after reading the responses to your question, I may bring her somewhere else. She's had about 7 ear infections since the end of January, so I completely understand what you are going through and hopefully we can both get our kiddos healthy again! Something that does help my daughter though... if he has a lot of excessive ear wax, try putting a drop or two of mineral oil in each ear, once a day and it helps clear out the ears. Good luck!

My daughter had a lot of ear infections when she was about 1. One after another. I took her to a chiropractor. After a couple of appointments she did not have another ear infection. Just make sure that the chiropractor has worked with young kids before.

Hope he is feeling better!!
