15 years ago today Tupac Shakur died. He lived by the sword and died by the sword...shot in Vegas. His music really touched me. I loved that he was hard and soft and complex and real. He had a politically conscious mind and that came out in his music. He put together poignant words that summed up the frustration, anger, resentment of a whole group of pissed off people and did it with a cool beat in the background. He used to say he was like a journalist, reporting on what he saw in the streets. He honored his mother, the women from his neighborhood, and spoke sometimes harsh words of absolute blinding truth. Yes masogynistic. Yes thuggish. Yes profane. But profound nontheless. Were you touched by Tupacs music or message? DId he mean anything to you? Were there songs that take you back to a time and place when you hear them? For me "Can you get away" was the theme song to one of my romances. Changes, Life Goes On, Hail Mary, Picture me Rollin, SO Many Tears, Only God Can Judge Me, Keep ya Head up, all get heavy rotation in my car. This quote sums it up "“When my Heart Can Beat No More I hope I die for a principal or a belief that I have lived for” - Tupac. Rest In Peace
I believe I covered the thuggish profane, complex, masogynistic part! I didn't omit that. I also covered the "living by the sword and dying by the sword" part. The fact that he died in a sensless shootout, rather than for something he believed in is the ironic tragedy of it all. It's really bad form to speak ill of the dead. Especially in the middle of someone elses tribute.

I love it that you found meaningful and touching music to accompany some of the significant times of your life. I didn't get close to any of Tupac's music, but do have a few 'anthems' that have been important in my life.
I'm pretty sure not one of 'my' musicians led a stainless life, but that's something separate from the genius they carried and shared with the world. I will always be grateful for the way their music touched, tenderized, and encouraged me. The world is a bigger place, and I'm probably a bigger person, because of their gifts.
I'm older; I grieved when Jimi Hendrix died, and still wonder sometimes how much more amazing music might have bubbled up from his well of creativity.

Wasn't touched by his music but what has touched me has been his mother's ability to keep his image, music and memory alive even after all this time. His mom rocks against senseless violence. I wonder if I could be as vigilent after my son was murdered and the murderer still hasn't been found.

I used to listen to California Love and Changes, but those were probably the only ones of his songs I would have heard on mtv at the time. I saw Hail Mary for the 1st time on Fuse today, but I didn't know the significance.
I'd rather give a 'shout out' to God. I do relate with certain singers/lyrics but that doesn't mean I will send a tribute their way especially if the life they led wasn't the kind I'd want to set as an example for my children. BTW I'm not a 'churchy' person but I do only want to honor people who are truly worthy.
