Remedies for Tailbone Pain

Has anyone experienced tailbone pain during their pregnancy? I'm around 6 months and have been experiencing discomfort for awhile but it seems like it's getting worse! I mentioned it to my doctor but she had no advice and researching it on line, I've discovered I'm not alone but no one seems to have any fix for it.

What can I do next?

L., I had horrible tail bone pain through neary my entire pregnancy. Toward the end it was so bad that that I couldn't lay or sit and standing helped only because I could move to ease it. My OB had total disregard for the circumstances- even after my daughter was born.

When I had my daughter I found it really difficult to sit or to get up after I had been sitting. While in the hospital and at home I noted that I could not physically tuck my knees up to my chest, I had to manually move them. My legs would also go out from under me.

After a year of no resolve I was told by a neurologist (I'd also had a tear in my spine from epidural) that something was amiss but to live with it. When asked whether physical therapy or training would help he literally told me not to waste my money.

My husband had a freak situation requiring emergency back surgery, it was his therapist that recognized and set me up with some gals with the group he works for. They found that the sacral area of the spine had not only moved but it twisted so much that my hips/pelvis was out of alignment by as much as three inches one direction and two the other.

I then set up a cycle of therapy and got the problem corrected. Apparently from what I was told this is not an uncommon problem (although it usually isn't as bad as mine was) and the use of some very gentle techniques corrected it. I still have some muscle pain but was given excercises and stretches to help keep everything in place and to keep the muscle corrected.

See if your insurance covers and check it out or find a very qualified massage therapist who has trained in myofacia release.

I did not check to see where you are located but Concord Therapy in Belden Village is where I went.

Good luck!

I had the same issue with mine, except it was not only my tailbone. My groin area felt as though I had been kicked repeatedly! My Dr. suggested I use this pregnancy girdle looking thing. I tried it, but couldn't handle it. (Too Confining!) I exercised. I did the stair stepper at home several times a week fpr about 15-30 min and that seemed to help! Increase in flexibility and muscle strength?! If you don't exercise already, you should check with the doc 1st though.

After labor & delivery, I had discomfort with my tailbone too. A resident showed me how to help that heal by having my husband cup his hand around my tailbone from in front of me, and rock me, while I'm sitting in a fetal position. That helped me.

Hi L.:

The tailbone and affected skin is a common pressure site on the body. Is the pain related to pressure from when you sit, or is it ongoing? Many people who are prone to pressure soreness at the coccyx area use an inflatable donut type cushion to use while sitting to relieve pressure and possible skin breakdown from bone-on-skin contact. They are available at medical supply stores and surely other places. Cost is @ 15 bucks. That might fit well into the computer chair at work and give you some relief : )

Blessings, M.

Hi -

I had awful tailbone pain and the donut-seat (looked like a padded toilet seat to me) really helped. I got mine at Miller's Medical Supplies - it was a heavy-duty foam cushion, though, not inflatable...

Good luck!
