My husband and I are looking into a potential relocation to the Baton Rouge area. Has anyone lived there before? How does it compare to DFW? Can anyone recommend a family friendly area with good schools to look at as far as buying a home? Any advice would be appreciated!

My husbands family is all there. They live in Denham springs and Watson. they all sent their kiddos to the watson school district. They are all in college now! Louisiana has a great finance system for colleges!

I would check into that ae! They are about 30 minutes from Baton Rouge!

Hi S.,

I grew up in Baton Rouge. I have lived in DFW since 1985 but my mom, brothers and rest of my family still live there. I miss it. The people, culture and food are great. There are lots of places you can get to easily from there. And New Orleans is only an hour or so down the highway. You can get to the Florida beaches in 4 hours.

Baton Rouge will not be like the metroplex. It is much smaller. I would say that Baton Rouge is about the size of Fort Worth. The malls won't be the same. It will be way different from here. If this is the only place you have been, then you may experience some culture shock. It is still a great place. I go home at least one to two times a year.

My brother will tell you that living in the outskirts such as Denham Springs or Walker is far better than living in Baton Rouge. I don't know much about the schools anymore but I can get an email address for you to a friend of mine and she can fill you in on lots. The school system will not be as good as here. A lot of my friends still there put their kids in private school. If you want my friend's email addy, please let me know.

Good luck

J.

You are going to LOVE it!!! Louisiana is one of the most friendly places on earth! Its been a while since I lived there; but Prairiville is the area most people are buying in. Assension Parish Public Schools are great & you can't beat The Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Schools (if you're Catholic). If not, Parkview Baptist is wonderful; as well as the Episcopal School System, Luthern School & of course University High (elem-hs). I know a great real estate agent if you need one!
Good Luck!

Good morning S.. I am not really familiar with the Baton Rouge area but am a local Realtor and I would be happy to get you hooked up with a good agent from that area that would be able to help you get information about schools and churches and such! Of course this would be free and of no charge to you.

As well, if I can help you sell your current home... I would love the opportunity to help you there as well.

Baton Rouge is nice but pale in comparison to the schools in DFW. If I had to make a decision based on the differences in schools, I would stay here or put my kids in private school there.

S., We moved here from Baton Rouge. We only lived there for 1 year, but really loved it. The people, culture and the food are all wonderful. The bad part is the school systems. I would NOT send my children to any Baton Rouge Parish school! There are tons of private schools, but if you want public, stay a bit south in Acension Parish schools (Prairieville area). There are tons of new communities popping up all over in the Greater BR area. BR is also a great location for traveling! So close to gulf coast beaches! And don't shy away fron New Orleans. It is a wonderfully family friendly city. Just ask locals the ins and outs. Good Luck! S.
