I do it and I dont care all that much if people get mad. I have to eat too and I have the right to eat what I want.
OMG! Some girl (that I already can't stand) just made fish for lunch at work. The whole place stinks and people are complaining left and right. I am not sure I will be able to eat lunch and I'm meeting hubby at a Japanese Grill in an hour - okay, I lied...I'll eat, but MAN!
Do you ever do that? Heat up something you know stinks in an enclosed room (our whole office is one big room - kitchen and all) or would you maybe eat that outside or save it for dinner at home?
I did it when I was pregnant. I had broccoli for breakfast. The girls I worked with at the time (all 6 of us) laugh about it still, and it was 4 years ago. But that's not as bad as fish (to me). Gross!
Okay, the smell is gone now! I agree that it's an unwritten rule. Or at least be courteous if you're going to do it! After she finished, she walked around the whole office with her bowl or plate or whatever she had on it before she went to wash it. Gross.
The steakhouse doesn't smell like fish, somehow. And my husband and daughter always get shrimp there. Or if there is a smell of fish, it goes away quickly...not like the smell in here earlier :).

I did it 1 time but I didnt know it would smell bad. it was shrimp. People thought it was bad and told me not to eat it. I think it was the spice. I felt bad that I upset them but I was hungry and ate it. My mom gave me them from leftovers.
It was an unspoken rule at my last employer that no stinky food went in the microwave. It was also well known that the CEO hated, hated, hated the smell of popcorn. One time, a new hire tried to do some in the microwave and several people raced to the break room to stop him.
It's all about courtesy. You know when you're about to cook something smelly, so just don't do it. There are a million other things people can bring to work to eat, so why make others miserable?
oh we had a few people in my workplace that ALWAYS re-heated fish.... and boy did the fish and the people who re-heated it smell... the aroma got all over them... it was so disgusting... there are also those who feel the need to re-heat a cheese dish..............
Any office that I have worked in had food rules of what could and could not be brought and heated in the microwave and eaten in the building. No Indian food was the top of the list, no matter how yummy the smell is not attractived to all, Fish was a HUGE one, Popcorn was another (too many ppl burn it. I do not remember some of the others but I know there have always been rules about this.
There's someone at my work that eats fish and it stinks up the whole place.
I also hate burned popcorn. People put it in and walk away and it stinks for hours and the microwaves reeks!
I won't reheat my lunch if I have fish - I'll eat it cold because I know some people don't like the smell. If I have tuna - too bad. That will smell no matter what. I have a coworker that will order sandwiches with lots of onions - she always apologizes for the smell (but I love onions, so it doesn't bother me!). Another friend mentioned that she hates the smell of maple oatmeal. We can't please everyone all of the time! Maybe keep some Febreeze or another light smelling spray as a cover up, and make light of it. We all can't change our eating habits with finicky noses :)
Plus - I assume the Japanese Grill will still smell like fish, with other aromas mixed in!
The thing is, she probably likes the smell, she is after all eating it, right? So she may not be aware of how offensive the smell is to others. I hate seafood so I probably would've had to leave the office for a bit, ugh. Your broccoli breakfast is funny!
I think that's kind of the unwritten work rule, no fish and no cruciferous veggies in the microwave! Hate it when people break it. That and burned popcorn.
I know exactly what you mean, I used to work with a large group of people of many different ethic groups. I hated when the Somali's would cook some type of food they would always bring, it stunk up the whole place the whole day. Or the Japanese would bring in their fish to reheat, not sure which was worst, but they sure did stink!!! Too bad your whole room is open or I'd say just stay out of lunch room. :P
I think microwaving fish and seafood should be banned outside of private homes! Disgusting! We've made enough if an issue here that no one does it anymore, but when I taught, we had a closet-sized, closed in lounge, and one beeyotch seemed to think it was cute to constantly bring fish no matter how much we complained. Some people are complete jerks! I feel like, if you don't want me to come fart at your desk, then don't heat up fish abd seafood where I can smell it, because it's equally revolting.
I think it's basic common courtesy & one of those unwritten rules that exist in office life.
Nevertheless, some douche bag always has to stink up the joint once in a while. Blech.
Heated fish in the microwave is completely gross. My old boos used to get a burger covered with raw onions and eat it in the office. The whole office reeked... I don't know which one is worse.
Bleh...
