Has anyone used Reglan to increase milk supply? I have been looking on breastfeeding websites about the drug and they are stating that side effects are possible, including anxiety and depression. What mom really needs more anxiety moments, you know!?! Has anyone used this drug? Did you have any side effects from the medication? Were they bothersome to you? Did the medication work well enough to even bother with taking it? Thanks ladies!

So What Happened?

Wow, the Reglan really works...even better than the Fenugreek. Any my son isn't allergic to it. Yay! I have noticed a big jump in my supply, even at night when I was down to getting barely anything. Now I'm getting nearly 4 ounces at midnight! It did make me pretty tired for the first 2 to 3 days though. I think that part is getting better. And the best part, I haven't experienced any anxiety and depression type symptoms. Thanks ladies.

Hi, I used Reglan after my twins were born to get my milk supply up also. And I also had terrible side effects like the severe anxiety and depression. Being alone with the girls while my husband was at work was the worst. If you could have someone there with you I don't think it would be as bad. At least that was how it worked on me, you might not have any problems. I would try the Fenugreek first, and then the Reglan. Good Luck!

Hi C.--

I took Reglan when I was breastfeeding my son. My milk supply had dropped and my peditrician gave me a prescription for it. I'm not sure if there were side effects since I was already fairly anxiety-ridden about my milk supply, but it brought my milk WAY up. It was great. So in that sense, it actualy lessened my anxiety since I didn't have to worry about having enough milk for my son. I wouldn't take it unless you've noticed a loss in your milk of course but, for me, as long as it didn't hurt my son and I didn't have HUGE effects, I was willing to take it in order to keep breastfeeding and it truly worked wonders.
Hope that helps--maybe others have had different effects, but I highly recommend Reglan if your doctor agrees you can take it.

I have boosted my supply with the help of Healthy nursing tea. I didn't use Reglan so don't know it works or not.

Chasity, The first question is what is happening to make you think you need to increase your milk supply? Then you can go from there. But, the Reglan is just a temprary fix and only used approximately 10 days to help w/ milk supply. It really helps your let down reflex as opposed to really helping your body "make more milk." I used with first 3 kids during stressful periods which around the same age as your baby. However, after baby no. four I can definitely say that rest(when you can), drink water and nurse as often as the baby wants too is the key if nothing else is happening w/ your body. If your baby nurses frequently your supply will increase. You can also pump after feeding baby and then 45 minutes later pump. These things help increase milk supply so you can avoid Reglan. Also, relax.....your supply(unless medically something is happening) will adjust. The hardest times to nurse for me were at the exact age your son is now and I quit with first two babies at this time b/c of that and medical problems. But with babies no. 3&4 I was determined to make it through 3-4-5 months and it is wonderful now:-) PLease email if you need more support or have more questions. Call your hospitals' lactation consultant or anyone in relation to breast feeding....it is very important to get support right now:-) Good luck! Becky Evans P.S. Not sure if you can get too depressed from Reglan if you are only on for a couple weeks.....the drug can also have some side effects on baby...it has not been proven to be 100% fgor baby

It helped me, but I no longer need it. My supply luckily stayed up! The only thing it DID do was make me EXHAUSTED!

I've not used Reglan personally, but -as a breastfeeding professional- I have worked with many mothers who have. More often than not, they end up with exhaustion and very frequently depression. It seems that postpartum women are very susceptible to these side effects because they happen more often than for the general population.

Domperidone is at least as effective (often more effective), although cost more. It's often hard to get ahold of, as well. I think most people end up ordering it online. You can order it online, legally, if you have a prescription. I will admit that most people order it from overseas, though.

Here is some great information on galactogogues (anything that increases milk supply):

I took Reglan to increase milk supply with both of my children and had terrible side effects both times. The first time I was able to take it for a few weeks before the anxiety symptoms (feeling like an elephant was on my chest, heart racing, feeling short of breath, and like I needed to jump out of my skin!) became so bad I had to stop. This past winter I took it when nursing my daughter and had these symptoms after the first dose. I even tried cutting the pills in half and taking less but more frequently and it didn't help. It IS helpful with increasing milk supply and it won't hurt to try it and just see if you have the side effects. Some women have used it with no problems! Another thing to note though is that it is only effective while you are taking it. Once you stop, your supply will fall again unless your nursing frequency has increased enough to keep your prolactin levels up that high. Best wishes and kudos for being so committed to breastfeeding! :-)
P.S. Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle are wonderful herbal treatments for milk supply (2-3 capsules of each 3x/day). You can get them at GNC or The Vitamin Shoppe. I took both and was very happy with the results. The only side effect is that fenugreek will make you smell like maple syrup. They say if you don't smell like syrup, you aren't taking enough to help your milk. It was a small inconvenience though and my husband craved waffles for weeks! :-)

I didn't use Reglan, I tried Fenugreek first. It's an herbal supplement you can get at GNC. I noticed an increase in my milk supply right away and it stayed up as long as I kept taking the pills. My peds doc and gyn doc both recommended it. As far as I could tell, the only side effect of the herb was more milk.
