Hi...We are hoping that we get orders to Lakenheath but I am wondering what type of nursing jobs are available in the area. Or if it is even an option to work while there. Any help would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I really hope your experience is better than mine has been. What type of nursing is your specialty??

We have been here a little over 3 years and it has been very frustrating. There is a small hospital on base, which is mostly staffed by the military. There are a few civilian positions but they are very hard to come by, as in you have to know someone to get in. They encourage nurses to volunteer until a position comes open. I am a BSN, IBCLC and have Peds picu and nicu experience with all the certs and was not able to get into the hospital here.

Off base, if you are a generalist I believe it is possible to work here, BUT to work as a "childrens nurse" it requires special British schooling. I have no interest in working with adults so that was it for me.

There is always school nursing, but those positions rarely come open, I have seen one spot open in my 3 years here.

Overall this base has been wonderful. So many great daytrips and castles and opportunities for travel. Careerwise though it has been tough.

If you need any more info send drop me a line. Maybe I can help point you in the right direction.....

There is a airforce hospital on Lakenheath. The majority of the hospitals off base are government run by a department called the NHS. I am not sure what type of nurse you are, but it is probably best to contact the NHS to ensure your nursing qualifications are recognised in the UK. http://www.jobs.nhs.uk/ Check out the requirements on the website as it will provide you with the best and most accurate information for working in the UK. Your work permit should be arranged through the base.
We have lived in England for the past 4 years. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Good luck!

All I know is that Addenbrooks (which is in cambridge) is low on manning and I would assume that they are hiring. I think the hospital on Lakenheath also hires civilians.
Good luck.
If you need any info about the area let me know.
