We just got notice that our "FREE" checking account is no longer free. If we do not have a direct deposit that totals $1000 per month we have a $10 monthly fee. If we use our debit card we have a $4 monthly fee. If we use our debit card more than 25 times there is a $.25 charge for each additional use. What happened to our "free" checking account?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Cheryl, I tried to call and can't even get a real person on the phone. :( I just e-mailed them and am waiting for a reply back.

Obama did. You remember the regulations that were supposed to protect us from the mean old banks. Well they thought it would be best to regulate the transactions fees that the banks can charge merchants so they shifted them to the consumers. That would be your fee on your debit card.

The free checking accounts were only possible because those that abused their accounts were charged overdraft fees. They can no longer charge all those fees so they can't offer free checking unless there is another way to guarantee money coming in that they can invest or lend out. A paycheck is a guaranteed stream of money so they wave the fee if you direct deposit.

All of this is Dodd Frank and, oh what is that darn name, I don't want to google it but you can. :) Consumer protection blah blah blah

Denise dear all the banks paid the TARP money back except for Citigroup with interest. So what money needs to be recouped? Perhaps instead of looking at what they claim the regulations would do take a good look at the unintended consequences. This post would be one of them. Another big one is a flight to payday loans which charge around 400% interest, thank god our brilliant president saved us from 30%

Try a credit union. My checking account is free if I keep a $500 minimum balance, otherwise it's $2 a month with no other restrictions. You are totally getting ripped off.

A lot of banks are changing policies, ours too. We recieved a notice saying our free checking would be charged $8.00 a month unless we either had 2 direct deposits or used our debit card a given number of times per month. That's not a problem with our regular account but we had a couple of back up accounts that we weren't using regularly and closed those out. You might want to start checking around with some other banks.

Sometimes a 'free" account is linked to a savings account. Do they offer that as another option to keep it "free"? Our bank does.

Here are some of the benefits of Obama's new credit/debit card bill:
* Banks can no longer raise interest rates suddenly and without cause.
* Consumers will no longer be charged late fees for payments posted late.
* Overdraft fees will only apply to those who ask for overdraft protection.
* Young people under 21 cannot be given a credit card without parental permission or proof of strong ability to pay.

oooohhhh girl!!! "free" went out the door a while ago!!!

We have to keep $5K in hubby's savings for BofA (should be PinA) to keep it "free"...since he's been with them since 1980 - and he HATES them - he won't change...so I don't bank with them. I have USAA...and it's "free" to me no minimums and no direct deposit....if you have been or your parent was active duty service - check them out...

I would call them if you have been with them a long time and tell them - not only no but heck no....you might be surprised at what banks will do to keep your business!!!

GOOD LUCK!
