Refrigerator Ice Makers

How often do you dump out the ice in your fridge ice maker?

We do use ice often, but sometimes we'll go a week or so without really using it. Sometimes in the winter we hardly use any so it just sits there and starts to get a freezer burn smell to it. I just went into the freezer to grab some lunch and there is a strong odor in there that I didn't notice a few days ago. I'm thinking its the ice. So I pulled the bucket out and dumped the ice into the sink. Now its slowly starting the refill process.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I mentioned to hubby last night that I had dumped the ice, and he said yeah, the boy commented the other night that the ice smelled/tasted weird. I think part of the problem was also that there were 2 packs of strawberries in the fridge and one was left open.

The only time we've dumped the ice was the very first batch. We go through a lot of ice, I guess. My husband and I drink a ton of ice water daily, and so do the kids.

We have an inline filter installed in our water line to the fridge, so the ice itself tastes great. We do go through a lot of ice, so it never really sits that long, I guess. If I'm pulling everything out to clean the freezer, I'll dump the ice out of the bin and clean it, but other than that, it doesn't really seem necessary.

I know exactly what you mean--it doesn't smell fresh, and sometimes strong smelling foods just ruin everything for the ice, don't they? LOL
I dump ours about every month. More if needed.

Why do you dump it? We use it all the time, so I guess it's always new. The first batch made when we got it about 18 months ago we dumped, along with quite a few glasses of water. But that's it. So I'm curious, are we supposed to dump it?

ive noticed that when the ice has been in there too long it starts to look white.. like frosty.. then its time for it to go .. in the summer it gets used and never has to be dumped usually its the opposite and we're all waiting for it to make more.. but in the winter we get rid of it when more of the ice cubes are white then clear-ish

Haven't ever heard of that. If it is smelling then something in your fridge or freezer needs to be thrown out.

I have noticed that my FIL's ice tastes a bit like tobacco occasionally and we don't really use it when we are there. He doesn't notice it though.

We've never dumped ours - but we've never had a funny smell to it either. We have an on-off lever for it and I use that to control the amount in the freezer so maybe that's why.

I never thought to dump. With 6 of us, i think it is being constantly made though....

I do once a week into a cooler that we take to soccer. Before soccer though, not very often.
