Reflux in 3 Month Old

My nephew was just diagnosed with acid reflux a couple weeks ago. He's been on liquid zantac since then and it's helped some, but wasn't stretching in between doses. He was already at the maximum dosage, so his DR prescribed prevacid. Now they are these disolvable tabs that my sister has to put into 30 mls of water, give him 15 mls and discard the rest. But the directions aren't clear if she should do this all at once or through out the day. Has anybody else used this for their baby?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok my sister got in touch with the DR and has to put the pill in 4mls of water give him about half and toss the rest. Not sure if it's helping. Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't. How do you go about using the Mylanta? How much would you give him? He's 14 lbs. Thank you everybody for your input!

Hi K.,

I feel for your sister. My son also had reflux really bad as an infant. He was on zantac for a while and it did not help. We chose not to do anything at that point. He was still gaining weight on a regular schedule and did not seem to have too much discomfort. The good news is that they do grow out of it. I'd also suggest that she call the doctor to find out the exact way that her son should get his dosage.

Plse check out: http://heartburn.about.com/od/infantschildrenandreflux/a/...

Looks quite helpful. I would also try elevating baby's crib so his head is higher than his chest. This may provide some relief. Keep well and God Bless.

I am presently taking care of a child, now 1 1/2 years that had reflux as an infant and she too was on prevacid and mylanta. It worked pretty good, although she'd still have crying jags from time to time. Her parents also got a wedge for the baby to sleep on. Make sure she sits up for a while after eating/drinking. You want the food to digest and not go back up the esophagus. Have mom contact her doctor to clarify the directions.

I would guess she is supposed to give it all at once, that is my experience with a boy I used to watch. It seems like a waste to throw half of it away though, she should see if she can store it and use it for the next dosage.

my daughter is 7 months old and has been on prevacid for about 4 months. i put the tab in just enough water to disolve it and give it to her that way. she is taking a whole one and that seems to work the best.

One thing you may want to tell her is that reflux is often a sign of food intolerance. If your sister is nursing let her know that it may help for her to eliminate certain common allergens from her diet for a trial (everything with dairy and everything with wheat) to see if that helps. If the baby is being fed formula she should know that all the commercial formulas (even the soy based ones) contain traces of dairy protein (casein) and many infants don't tolerate that. I get so frustrated that docs continue to prescribe all of these meds without first asking moms to make some basic changes. This may not be the case with your sister. But I do see it time and time again. Good luck!

Hi, I feel really bad for your sister. My son went through the acid reflux until he was almost 10 months. The doctors did all kinds of tests. He also took zantac. It did help him. He took the prevacid too but that made him extremely sick and I could not see him suffer with that medicine. You are suppose to give him everything of the tablet by the way. There is one remedy that helped my son and they are natural drops. It is called Gripe water. It is very hard to find but I was able to get it at Baby Depot and babies 2 teen in Manassas. Also, has she tried putting some cereal in his formula? That helps too because it makes the formula more solid.. Always try to have him sleep in a upwards position loke in the car seat, or the swing or even placing a pillow or 2 under his matress. I hope this helps.. M.
