What do you do for your child's reflux? Do you notice they gag for air alot and have hiccups several times a day? When did they outgrow it? My little girl is on 2ml of zantac, but that doesnt seem to help much. She still is gaging for air!

What can I do next?

My little one spit up about 40xs per day until he was 9 months. The Zantac helps the pain, but doesn't reduce the actual reflux. My little guy cried endlessly until the Zantac so I can attest it works wonders. It might get a bit worse before it gets better. I think about 4 months was the worst. Solid food helped a lot. Hang in there.

My son has reflux and was on .5ml of zantac twice a day. He just turned 7 mo. and we have reduced the med to once a day. His ped. said that the zantac would help with the discomfort but not necessarily with the spitting.

My son also has an intolerance to cow's milk in my breast milk. This is not uncommon for babies who have reflux. If you are nursing, try eliminating dairy from your diet for 7-14 days to see if the spitting gets any better. It takes that long for the protein to be out of your system. Be sure to look for hidden dairy in foods too such as whey, caesein, etc. If you are formula feeding, you may want to talk to your doctor about trying a different formula that isn't milk based such as soy.

It does get better as their digestive system matures. Keep lots of laundry detergent on hand, cloth diapers for burp cloths on hand and a good sense of humor. It isn't fun but you'll get through it! Good luck!!

My sympathies. My baby boy had pretty severe reflux that started to improve around 4 months. He's six months now and although he is still a frequent "spitter" it really is mostly spitting up. I had him on a full, adult strength dose of Prilosec and I found that it helped but certainly didn't stop it. I still used Maalox or Mylanta throughout the day. Another thing I did (because I was right where you are posting questions to other Moms) was cut dairy out of my diet. That was VERY difficult for me at first but if your breastfeeding I would strongly suggest that. It helped my son digest his food much easier and my pediatrician never mentioned that but several moms here did and I'm thankful to this day. If you'd bottle feeding try a non-dairy formula and see if that helps. It takes at least a week to get those dairy protiens out but it's worth a shot. Good luck, I know how miserable it can get but I promise you can help her get better and before you know it she'll be sitting with you at the table refusing to eat her dinner because it's "yucky".

There are a couple of natural products that will get your infant off of zantac and work well. They are from shaklee...they are Optiflora, EZ-gest and a Stomach soothing complex. My daughters 5 day old baby used this and NEVER went on any kind of meds. I will do my very best to answer your questions. Good Luck with your little one and the faster you can get baby off of zantac the better for her little body.

My son was diagnosed with reflux. Zantac wasn't enough. Check with your Ped, but our son needed Prevacid. Doesw she gag for air while drinking and cough? Ask the Ped about Dysphasgia as well. If you aren't getting enough help from the Ped (we didn't), ask for a referral to the pediatric gastrointerologist. This helped my son greatly!!!

I'm not a doctor, but you know your daughter. She may need more than your Ped can offer!

If you are willing to try a natural route - Optiflora is great and safe for newborns. I gave it to my son when he was weeks old. Are you nursing? Perhaps something in your diet is agrivating the reflux as well.
This link will take you to more info on optiflora or feel free to contact me with more info.

I feel for you:( If she's still gaining weight you don't need to worry too much. My first son had reflux. It's over-diagnosed, but it definitely sounds like yourdaughter has more than just excessive spit-up. The Zantac cut down on the screaming but not how much he spit up until he was older. He especially threw up everything if he sate too much. Here's what worked for us:
~We set up a 3-hour schedule instead of nursing on demand, with just a little lee-way. He threw up projectiley if he nursed any more than every 2 hours.
~I only nursed one side at a time and if he REALLY wanted to nurse again before 2 hours was up, I put him back on the same side so there wasn't much there.
~He slept in his car seat next to the bed until he was 6 months old, sitting up more helped and it's totally safe until they can squirm out. Even our pedi. told us his kids slept in their car seats! Sitting up helps a lot.
~It took three months of letting him suck on our pinkie fingers before we found a pacifier he'd take. Try one of each on the pacifier wall if you have to. Then, learn the difference between "my tummy hurts" and "I'm really hungry" so you don't over-use the pacifier and starve her.
~When no other form of comfort worked, we put him in his car seat and swung him hard, fast, and high, back and forth until our arms felt like they were going to fall off. It worked, it was worth it. I'd swing him 10 times on each side and got a bit of a work out:) lol

I know it seems awful right now, but it gets better, I promise. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

hello my son is 4 months old and also has reflux. He takes .3ml of Zantac 2 times day and at first it didnt seem to be working but the older he gets the better it is. For the past two weeks i only been giving him the zantac once at night before bed because thats when hes laying down and its the worst.Oh, and his doctor told me to add 1 tsp of cereal to his bottles to make the formula thicker and it seemed to help. But, the cereal does not provide any kind of nutrients so dont add anymore. We were also told to sit him up for an hour after he eats. Hope this helps!!

A., My daughter also has reflux (as did all my other children) One thing you need to know about zantac is that it is an acid reducer it will NOT stop reflux. My little one is on Mylanta and gripe water (which will help soothe tummy ache) Make sure she is upright for 30 min or so after eating. If you are bottle feeding maybe she has an issue with the formula or if your breastfeeding you might need to watch what you eat. She will out grow it in a few months. Talk to you dr about mylanta. Good Luck. Feel free to email me @ ____@____.com if you need any help or just want to chat.

I had 3 daughters with reflux and they all out grew it by a year old. Have you talked to the doctors since they put her zantac? I had to on zantac and my last daughter was on something else but I can't remember what it was!! It sounds like either the dosage is wrong and maybe they need to increase it. Or they need to try something else. Zantac worked miracles on my first 2 until they gained weight and had to adjust the dosage. Once they raised the dosage they were perfectly healthy and happy again. I would talk to her dr. I also put cereal in their bottles to make it heavier so it did not come up as easy. I think they told me to put 1 tsp. per ounce. I never laid them down flat after a bottle. They always had their heads elevated at night. It should get even easier after they start solids. Which you have a little way to go before then. But I would definetly talk to dr. Good luck!! Hang in there. It is tough but she will be fine. Yes hiccups can be sign of reflux. But if your dr dosen't do anything I would see another dr. Before my first one was diagnosed with reflux the dr kept telling me it was colic and I said NO IT IS NOT!! Well after a while she quit eating because she new it always hurt afterwards. So I took her to childrens hospital and they put her on an IV and prescribed her zantac. And not even 2 days after her first dose she completely changed to a totally different baby. So if your dr dosen't want to do anything take her to childrens. Goodluck!!

Dear A.,

Have you had your daughter tested for food allergies? I have sensitivities to dairy products, and one of my symptoms was heartburn/reflux. When I discontinued eating all dairy (except for organic yogurt with live cultures) the reflux issues went away completely. Dairy and high fat foods can cause reflux, so it's important to stick with a wholesome diet that is as fresh as possible. My doctor told me, "Fresh instead of frozen, frozen instead of canned" for most foods.

My little girl had TERRIBLE reflux - I wound up having to get a scale that measured to the tenth of an ounce - I would weigh her, breast feed her, and then wait till she spit up and weigh her again to see how much she actually kept down. Sometimes she would nurse 6 ounces and spit up 4 - it was heartbreaking! I went thru that for about 3 months, trying to avoid medicine. Doc put her on Zantac, but she hated the taste and it was such a struggle to get any down and then it did not seem to help. At about 3.5 months, we switched to Previcid - she didn't seem to mind the taste of that and I saw a HUGE difference. I kept her on that for about 6 months and by then it seemed to have resolved itself and she did okay without meds. Best of luck.

Your daughter needs to try prevacid. My son had severe reflux from 4 weeks up to 3 years old, when he outgrew it. Zantac did nothing for him, only Prevacid Solutabs worked!
