Hello -

Is anyone familiar with a physician in Carrollton, or Frisco that treats children with ADHD? Does anyone have a success story on a prescribe medicine that they have used for a child with ADHD? I am considering trying something for my 14year old. We have tried all of the non-medical ways of handling this however now that she is preparing to go into High School and has barely made it through the past 4 years with passing to the next grade level, I just don't want her to fall behind in her studies. Every year has seemed like a big struggle for her to focus and stay on top of her school work. Her attention span is very short and if asked to do more than 2 things at a time she has trouble. We've used a couple of things from the health food store that claim to help with attention span however they haven't seemed to make a huge difference. I would just like to see her succeed so that id doesn't affect her self esteem, because we all know how cruel kids can be in school sometimes.

My son is 8 and was diagnosed around March with ADHD. He takes Metadate CD in the morning and has truly made a turnaround with his grades last year. He was almost failing spelling but went up to the A-B Honor year.

We also did not want to try medications but our pedi strongly suggested medications given our son's high score for the hyperactivity part of the ADHD. We are in Maypearl though but I can say the meds work. We are also seeing signs of it in our 5 yr and may have her tested soon just to sure before she starts school this August.

As a teacher, I have seen many kids on medication for ADHD - I used to think it was used to just drug them into submission, but as newer drugs come out and more doctors are focusing on functionality - to concentrate and still be able to play - I wouldn't think twice about putting my kids on it if they needed it.

Regardless of what your son ends up on, realize that it may take a few weeks to see the full results - and if you're not happy with them, another medicine may be a better choice... regardless of your best friend's niece's daughter's friend's experience with the same medications.

Dana!

I know your pain. My 16 year old has struggle with Inattentive ADD. Same as A.D.H.D but without the hyperness. She first started showing signs in 2nd grade. At that time I talked to a physician and he asked me a few questions said she had it and said we'd try her on a medicine for a few weeks and if that didn't work we'd try her on something else. Needless to say I was not going for that. I needed some medical proof or something! My daughter was not going to be a guinea pig for anything.

So years went by and she was passed on even though she struggled. Well in 7th grade I finally decided to look at some other avenues. We went to 2 psychologists over the past couple years. My daughter didn't care for either one. Then it was such a hassle to go there get them to write a letter and then have my peditrician write the script. So we kind of gave up. And the medicine Ritalin LA seemed to help a little but not enough. And I did my research and really trusted my peditrician so I was comfortable with using that med.

Well with her still struggling in school I decided to find a psychiatrist who could counsel and write the script for her. She will be a junior this year. We went to this dr. in desoto yesterday as a matter of fact. He wrote her a prescription for a newer drug. I don't remember the name of it but it last for 12 hours. I don't know if she took it today or not.

But I'm praying it will help her focus this year so she can prayerfully graduate on time.

So you're not the only one. And you have to do what's best for your child even it you don't really want to.

Please keep in touch and let me know how things go. I will get the name of the med and let you know.

Take care and God bless!

My 3 daughters have all had this problem with their children... One daughter home schooled all 5 of her kidds for a few years.. She put the 16 yr. old in school last year(she also put him on meds..He lost alot of weight, looked awful, she took him off) He did not fare so well in school and took him out.. they moved and she put him church counceling with a great guy..I hate to see kids stuck on meds. at such early ages...Maybe you could homeschool her for a year and see if there are things you could do 1o1..If my daughter could do it anyone can.. She not only had 5 kids, she kept my sisters baby!! OMG!!

My son was diagnosed with ADHD and Tourettes Syndrome just last year. We have been trying various medications with him. The first we tried, Focalin, was amazing. We saw results almost immediately! He was in 3rd grade at the time, and he passed his TAKS on the first try after miserably failing the pre-TAKS. However, it had a negative effect on his tics, and we are still looking for a replacement. We have tried Strattera, and had some success with that. I know that the medicine has helped my son, and that he is much happier when he can focus. I recently spoke to another dad who had a similar experience to mine. His child is so much happier with a small dose of medicine to help him focus. The most difficult thing is finding a doctor to help. Currently, our pediatrician is helping to manage the medication. Trying to find a psychiatrist was a frustrating experience.

Hang in there!
