Help!! My daughter is 7 months old, lastnight she started scratching her eye and I thought oh maybe she is just very tired. well, this morning it was swollen, red and tearing up and is has not stopped. Not to mention she is also teething and has a runny nose. I've put hot compressors on it and keep wiping it clean but the swelling has not gone down and it's still tearing up. She is still scratching her eye and I am scared if she does have pink eye she will get it on the other eye. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks

What can I do next?

I am no expert on pink eye.. although both of my kids just got over it finally. pink eye usually is goopy not watery. If her nose is really runny.. it could ber backing up into her eye.. and possibly out into her ears. My advice with any eye problem since it is so close to the brain.. is go and get it check out ( my son last year was hospitized for eye infection because of it proximity to the brain and potential for it to spread.)

It sounds like it is pink eye - I would DEFINITELY call your doctors office & speak to an advice Nurse, you also want to wipe her hands if she is wiping the infected eye that way you can reduce the chances of the infection getting to the other eye. Good Luck

Hi E.:

Don't be afraid to consult your pediatrician regarding things you don't know about. That's why they're there.

My baby had pink eye and I thought the same thing at first. All 3 kids ended up with it. How I new for sure it was pink eye is that the eye would be swollen, red, and contain mucus that caused the eye to seal shut when she slept. I called into the doc and got eye drops. It was a pain to put the eye drops in. The compress is great but I would call in the doc.

Don't wait to hear wht people online are going to tell you, they aren't Dr.'s she needs to see a pediatrician a.s.a.p. And I can tell you from experience that teething can have a lot of symptoms but red swollen eyes are not one... good luck I hope your baby gets better soon.

I'd either call or take her to the pediatrician - she may have pink eye, but she also may have scratched the surface of her eye or cornea accidentally and gotten an infection. It happens fairly often, and the ped with just prescribed an ointment or drops to heal it. If you let it go for too long though it can be really difficult to heal, so make a run to the doc's just to make sure - at the very least, the ped will be able to tell you for certain she has pink eye or not.

And, just for reference, teething neither causes runny noses or fevers. Runny noses and fevers are caused solely by infection, viral or bacterial. It is an old wives tail that teething causes anything other than teething - it can cause excessive drooling and unhappiness but all of those stories of teething causing runny noses, fevers, pink eye or diaper rash are completely false. Please see this link or look it up on the internet (this really isn't for you Erica, for people who may claim your babys eye infection is due to teething)

Put 2-3 drops of breastmilk in her eye with a dropper several times throughout the day. It really does work, and its all natural. (If you're not breastfeeding or pumping, you can borrow some from someone, ;)....This works on adults, too.
