Recurrent UTI

Hi Mommas,
My 4 y.o daughter had a UTI in July which responded well to antibiotics. To be on the safe-side, the pediatrician sent her for an abdominal ultrasound of the kidneys etc. which thankfully turned out ok. We talked about wiping front to back on several occasions. Now it looks like she has another one. She has been potty trained since 2 1/2 and is generally a little girl who can avoid going to the bathroom for a long period of time (i.e. when she gets up in the morning, if I don't ask her to go immediately (which I do), she would wait several hours). She also doesn't drink a lot of fluids at one time (maybe one ounce with meals on average---so I try to give her high fluid fruits etc. to compensate). I regularly encourage her to drink water and milk but avoid juice and chocolate milk (which she would drink a lot of at one sitting) unless it's for a special treat. Any suggestions about how I could doctor up her water or milk with something that doesn't involve use of an artificial sweetener or a lot of sugar? I can see how the combination of under-drinking and infrequent urination isn't working and would really like to get a handle on this sooner rather than latter. Really appreciate your suggestions!!!!

What can I do next?

A little juice as a preschooler is okay. If putting an ounce of juice into 4 ounces of water makes her drink it, I'd do that a couple of times a day. If a rounded teaspoon of chocolate milk powder makes her drink a glass of chocolate milk, I'd let her have that once a day too. I'm not big on tons of sugar, but if that's what she's getting and you're avoiding other sugary things like sweetened cereals, fruit cups in syrup, etc. it wouldn't bother me. I would avoid the things like Crystal Lite that others have recommended, that is a diet drink with artificial sweeteners - I believe sugar is better.

Make her slushies or smoothies in the blender with her juices (V8 stuff) ice and fruit.
My son is like this he will go for SO long without peeing--it scares me.

Don't forget about frozen fruit bars, freezer pops, jello and stuff like that too.

My 5 yr old has the same problems. We still have to dilute her juices. To get her to drink water, we buy Life Water with different flavors. Also, Arizona Green Tea is a big hit with her too...it has antioxidants in it too which are a plus. Chrystal Light has some to-go packets you mix with water too.

My 5 year old daughter is not a big drinker either. I have to remind her and bribe her to drink sometimes! In the morning she is allowed juice (orange juice or V8 Fusion watered down.) I let her have a juice box for lunch since she is in kindergarten, or she buys milk. For dinner she has to finish her milk (and dinner) before she can get a treat. Even juices and watered down juices she won't often drink all of... sometimes she will go hours without drinking more than a few oz. I have found that she really liked my water bottle, so I went and got her the same type... that helped a bit. I also let her use ice, or lemon wedges in her water because it is fun. You can also try getting some fun straws! Good Luck!

Try diluting her juice about 50/50, unless you do so already. That way you can give her "2" glasses of juice with just the sugar you'd find in 1. We also use ovaltine, instead of store bought chocolate milk or chocolate syrup. Still has some sugar, but does have a few vitamins and minerals thrown in, and you can control how much goes in the milk. I use about a tablespoon per 8ish ounces of milk and my kids love it. I'd also try to avoid citrus fruits because I think the acididty can be irritating. Hope she feels better soon.

Ditto the smoothies and slushies in the blender. There's also some stuff called "True Lemon" that is to die for and it come is lemon, orange and lime. You add it to your water and it tastes awesome. (at least to me) ha ha! My kids like it too.

I had reoccurring UTI's as a kid, and went through terrible testing with the doctor and hospital, only to find I wasn't drinking enough and wasn't wiping front to back. There are different types of UTI's based on the type of bacteria that she has, so therefore, they need to be treated with different types of antibiotics. I just a UTI and had to have a culture sent off because after 10 days on meds, I felt no relief. They had to change my antibiotic, and with that, I was feeling better in no time.

Hope she feels better soon. :)
