Recommendations for Sinus Rinses for Children

My 8 y.o. son suffers from post nasal drip. He uses a prescription nasal spray (Flonase), but I'm not seeing much improvement. I use saline spray from time to time and have him sleep with his head elevated, but the problem persists. I've read about sinus irrigations and am thinking of trying it. Anyone use a neti pot or nasal/sinus irrigation tool for their child? If so, have you noticed any improvement in their symptoms? Any other suggestions for successfully treating post nasal drip? The cough it causes is really interfering with his sleep! (and mine too)

What can I do next?

Hi K. - Have you investigated why he might have the drip? Many young moms see an improvement in asthma, allergies, etc. when they remove all chemicals from home & body. I've seen this make a huge difference for many! I'm here if you need more info. Good luck!

I agree with the Sinus Rinse bottles... if he'll use them. Post nasal drip is usually a symptom of allergies, and that is causing the coughing. I would try some benedryl at night and see if that gives him any relief. Works well for me : ) If so, then I might take him to an allergist to see if there is a better plan of treatment. Best of luck!

My entire family (hubby, myself, 16 yr old daughter) have the Neill Med Sinus rinse and it works wonders for us.

An 8 yr old would be able to understand the how to's of using it.

My daughter hates it but she will be the first to say she notices a positive difference when she uses it.

My hubby is the coughing one in the family and it is amazing at how soon the coughing stops after he uses the sinus rinse.

About $12 each and well worth it here.

Hi, K.:

Have you thought about a visit to
a Manual Lymph Drainage therapist in your
area for a couple of treatments?
Check the web for a therapist near you.
Good luck.

We have used the Neil Med Sinus Rinse bottle. It is the same idea as the Neti pot but more user friendly.

If you're using the nasal spray are you also using an antihistamine in conjunction with it? My girls take Claritin but sometimes that is just not enough. When that is the case I also give them Benadryl which seems to dry them up much better.

My 3.5 yr old also uses the NeilMed sinus rinse no problems. I haven't seen any improvement in his sinus drainage with it. But it does give him a couple hours of clear breathing. My husband uses the neti and swears by it. I would use it any day over blowing and trying to suction my kids nose. My son also tends to blow way too hard, so this was an easy way to keep him from causing more damage.

We have just recently had success trying claritan again, but benadryl at night seems to do the trick for my youngest. Good Luck...

i use the neil med squeeze bottle on my 4 year old. she has used it since she was 3. it helps soo much in washing all the junk out of there. yes i would totally try it. explain to him that it will be uncomfortable (like drowning). have him do a little then blow it out and so on. then make sure he blows his nose well afterwards. i also use benadryl for during the day with her in conjunction with the nasal rince.

I help my 8 year old son use a neti pot and he does very well with it. We use the pre mixed saline packets from NeilMed that came with the neti pot.

I just got hit HARD with sickness and the post nasal drip was making everything worse. I finally dragged myself to the bathroom to use my neti pot and it really helped with getting rid of the post nasal stuff.

I hope it works for your son!

My daughter, from 3-4 years old, could use a Neti Pot.
She uses it whenever she is sick... she gets sinus issues just like my Husband.

It greatly helps.
But you have to use it properly and per the directions.

Post-nasal drip, is irritating and causes coughing.
You could give him Kids Claritin.
It is an antihistamine and dries up the mucus etc.
My Husband who always has sinus issues... uses the Neti Pot regularly and Claritin.

Flonase, is a corticosteroid based spray.
It only, reduces inflammation. NOT cure... the illness or mucus.
It reduces, stuffiness.
Not mucus production or secretions.
That is why... the Flonase did NOT help your son.
