Recommendations for Kid's Digital Camera

My son will be five this summer and loves to take pictures. He is actually pretty good, so I would like to be able to print some of the photos he takes. I would prefer him to have his own camera and not use mine.

My dilemma is, do I purchase a kid's camera like the Fisher Price model, or let him use my old digital camera. My "old" camera was purchased three years ago by my husband for about $250-300.

Has anyone used the digital kid's cameras? Are they worth the time and money?

What can I do next?

We upgraded our personal digital camera from a Fugi Fine Pix (great cam) to a Sony Cyber Shot (great cam). We just gave daughter the Fugi. She loves taking photos and now she has her own which is about 4 yrs old but a great cam. She is 12.

I bought my son the fisher price camera at Wal-Mart for christmas, my son is really rough on toys and it has broken yet. The picture quality is okay but not professional but the kids love it.

I had heard negative things about the picture quality on the Fisher Price camera - basically that they were not good enough to print, dark, blurry, etc. The parents even tried the cameras to rule out moving kiddos, but the picture quality was still poor.
So my MIL bought my 5 year old a $25 digital from overstock.com and he loves it, has had no problems using it either.

My husband's best friend (who is a photographer) bought my son his Fisher Price digital camera for his birthday last year. He is 4 and loves it. It is definitely kid tough. I think they can run upwards fof $70-100, but I think our friend got a good deal online somewhere for about $70.

We got our daugther (4 years old) a Disney Digital Camera for her birthday last month. She loves it, and really I do to. I always forget to take my camera but hers is so small it fits in my purse (and even her mini-sized purse) The pictures come out pretty good considering the tiny thing they are taken with. Setbacks: one, you can't view the pictures, only download them on the computer to see. and Two, since it is so small young kids have a hard time getting their fingers out of the way at first. once you get past that it is no biggie. I can't remember but I want to say it was 20-30 dollars and came with cool disney editing software packed with borders, backgrounds all different disney characters. Very durable, and if she does tear it up, then oh well it was not expensive.

My SIL upgraded her camera and gave her 6 year old her old one. There have been no issues with her using it and she takes pictures of everything. They did rig it so that it hangs around her neck...it has been almost 2 years and she still uses it. As 6 year olds go, she is pretty mature and is ok with a little responsibility. Also, her camera privilages have become her punishment also...she loves it so much that that is the first thing they "take away". If you want a new camera, and you think your son can handle the responsibility, go for it and skip the Fisher Price.
