A friend is considering a move to Cincinnati as her husband got a great job offer. She'd be moving from Westchester County, NY which is super expensive so they'd be fortunate to be able to buy into one of the nicest suburbs around there. Anyone have recommendations where she should look first online to get an idea of the area? She's never been. In addition, her husband would be commuting west to IN so west side would be best but they've heard the nicest suburbs are north and northeast. Anything comparable on the west side? Finally, she's always lived in the northeast so is hesitant if it'd be a culture shock to move there. Is it a fairly friendly city or very insular and not open to people not from the midwest? Finally, she's an older mom - mid 40's with kids in 2nd and 4th grade. She worries she'd be the "old mom". In the northeast near NYC, lots of women have kids older but she's not sure if that'd be the case around there. Any insights? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Geez Jo W. People can take things so harshly. If someone from the midwest was worried about NY'ers bc she wondered if they were all rude, I wouldn't be offended. And how is she looking down on them? Cities like Boston are often described as insular and that's not midwest! And how is worrying she'll be too old for the other mothers looking down on them?? I think she's worried they'll look down on her! Finally, have your little laugh at whether or not they can sell their house. They don't need to. For one, no mortgage and two, enough cash in the bank to pay for another house outright. I didn't put that in bc that would be obnoxious and it's her business. I was trying to save people from writing about answers that wouldn't be helpful to her. You must have a lot of time to sit and write a long response that doesn't even answer my question in any way. Don't worry, I won't be pm'ing you.

OH GOD..I just typed a bible and accidently X'd out. Anyway East side is not too great. VERY blue collar.
I live in Northern KY. Hubby and I are not natives(Im from Chicago, Hubby from Fargo ND) we have lived here for 8 years but sadly have to say goodbye...moving to Cleveland next spring.
Anyway I LOVE Northern KY. you get big bang for your buck and the property taxes are VERY reasonable. For your friends since they can afford it...tell them to check out Triple Crown. (I think Nick Lashey has a house there)
Otherwise since he will be commuting to IN...what about moving to IN? THey have some nice places...but as far as I know the nice places in Cincinnati are Anderson township or Blue Ash...but DEFINATLY no to the East side for your friends. Anderson and Blue Ash would be too far of a commute...
Before moving, I called the City of Cinncinnati and then sent me a bunch of stuff about the City, School Districts etc. Your friends can start there... But they will need to decide what fits their familys needs. I dont think they would have a hard time adapting to the City...shouldnt matter if they live on the north side, east, west, south..we are all Cincinnatians.
Good luck

I grew up in a town outside of Cincy, in Indiana...West Harrison, IN. I loved it. Good school district. Nice people.
Harrison, OH is nice too.
Guess it depends on whether your friends want city-life or a little more small-town life.
Florence is nice in KY.
Hidden Valley, IN is a nice place too. A little more upscale than other places, if theyre looking for that.

Good luck to your friends! Hope they find a place that suits them :)

Cincinnati is more conservative, but not everyone is. Your friend will like it I think. There are plenty of cultural things to do. Many, many people have relocated there so she will be fine.
