We are finally done with our crib. We received it as a hand me down from my sister - it's about 14 years old. It's beautiful - maple sleigh bed style crib. Has a few scratches on it. It is a drop side crib.
I am looking for recommendations of what to do with the crib. Drop side cribs are no longer sold. Are there organizations that would take this as a donation?

It is now illegal to sell or donate a drop side crib. If it can be modified so both sides are stationary it would be okay but you can not sell or donate as is.
None of my kids died from our drop down crib. Not to be insensitive, but kids die from everything....even auto accidents, but cars don't seem to be recalled because it would be inconvenient. That being said, when we are done with ours, which is in perfect condition - even after 4 kids, we are taking it to Mexico....where some of the babies don't even have a bed. We only live an hour from Mexico and frequent there, so it's an easy option for us.
As a result of the massive drop-side crib recall — more than 2.1 million cribs — the CPSC is working with companies to provide fixes for their products. The remedy is an immobilizer kit. Many drop-side crib manufacturers will mail you a free kit that fits your specific crib. These devices secure the crib side, no longer allowing it to drop down, to prevent dangerous situations.
PS I'm pretty sure you can't sell anything on Craig's List that has been recalled....nor can you sell linens.
See if you can get a kit to convert the drop side - most manufacturers are offering those. Then list it on Craigslist for very little money; that's probably your best bet. The charitable organizations near me have all advertised that they can no longer accept drop side cribs.
No. You can't even donate them anymore. No will take them. Too many babies were being killed or severely injured by the drop down sides.
I'm not positive if this is a state law or the entire country. Unfortunately unless you want to take it apart and reuse the wood for something else, it is going to go into a landfill.
I don't know about there. But up here our Babies R Us periodically has a Great Trade in event where you can trade specific things in for 20% off coupons for select items.
In the past they have included 'outdated' cribs, expired carseats etc.
I plan on holding on to mine until the next trade in event that accepts cribs.
Otherwise.. Selling or giving away on craigslist is against the law, as well as any other places.

You cannot sell or donate any drop side crib. You can repurpose it or throw it out. The mattress you can donate.
I hate to tell you this, but since it's so old no store will take it - legally it has to be destroyed, not just trashed. SO SORRY to tell you this, but no where can take it and all will refuse it.
BUT if you know anyone who is handy there a lot of neat ideas on how to repurpose the crib - I've seen desks, planters, toddler beds, easels and lots more made from old cribs. Otherwise dismantle and use it for scrap wood.

I would list on craigs list that you have a crib for re purposing that is not to be used for children's sleeping. The is some "rule" out there that says you are not supposed to use a crib after 5 years. So the crib I have in my rafters that my 7 year old used in May 2005 and my almost 5 year old used in November 2007 is too old. (since it has always been mine I am comfortable using it myself for another baby if I need it) I don't know that it is illegal to sell it but people who know just wont buy it. If you list it for crafting/repurposing there are people who chop them up and make them over and use them for some cool projects. I would also make the buyer affirm they are aware that the crib is 14 years old and that you do not recommend it for sleeping babies due to the age.
Is your crib convertible to a toddler bed or full-size headboard? If so, maybe you can see if anyone on craigslist wants it in that form. That's what I plan to do with mine when it's time to get rid of it. I vaguely remember seeing some cute things to do with an old crib on pinterest, so I'll bet some people would be interested in the crib, even if they only plan to use some of the parts. It's such a shame to just throw away such nice woodwork. I probably wouldn't ask for any money for it.
first off there is a kit you can get to make it a solid crib that you don't put the side down.
another thought is to put it in your attic until you have grandchildren. When my boys were born my inlaws had the crib that their own children had used. they did have to fix it so the sides wouldn't go down but it was great having the kids in the same crib daddy had been in.

I hate that drop side cribs have gotten such a bad wrap! There are 2 kinds of drop sides and all of them got banned because 1 kind was bad, not both! If it is a drop side that had tabs on the top of the rails that you pull open with both hands to release down OR a metal bar on the bottom that you push in with your foot to release, I wouldn't do anything with, that is the kind with problems, get a kit to fix it and keep for your grandkids or trash it. If it is a different kind that that has no plastic or metal lock and realease mechanisms but has grooves in the wood that you push the whole gate wround to relase down then you are more safe. I would simply put out the word to friends that you have it and want a good home for it, see if you can post it on craigslist without selling it, or save it for your kids' babies. Someone somewhere wants this crib and if you want to wait to find someone, I think they would be grateful!! Anyone who knows these kind of excellent quality cribs will want one again and again. If I stil lived in Chicago I would come pick it up in a heartbeat!
