We use Diamond Brite from Meleleuca. Initially it appears pricy but because it's so concentrated, you need less of it, and it last longer so it's not really.
I think the subject says most everything. Let me know where you buy it, and if it's pricey.

I've never used a dishwasher, so can't say how well it performs, but I've been happier with Biokleen dish soap and laundry liquids than other "green" brands, and they make a dishwasher gel. Cost is roughly equivalent to other brands, but performance seems better. (The spelling of the company name is unfortunately tacky.)
Try Shaklee's dishwasher powder. It's a concentrate, completely eco-friendly and chemical free. I've been using it for a few years and I love it. I'm very particular about how my dishes come out from the washer and I've never had a complaint. I want to say its $20 but I've only had to buy 3/4 bags in the past 2 yrs so its paid off in the long run. Shaklee have awesome products!
They also have a dish soap concentrate that is FABULOUS, and again, absolutely chemical free.
We really like Seventh Generation. You can easily find it at Whole Foods or Target.
Our guy says only powder for dishwashers, liquid for washing machines.
So...not sure. Have you googled it?
BioKleen or Ecover. I buy from www.vitacost.com It's cheaper than in stores!
