Recalled Children's Medicine

I was at the pediatrician's office just yesterday morning, and my pedi said to go ahead and give it to my 23 month old since he is feeling so bad.

you know i often wonder the same thing.I wish there was some number to call if you see recalled items on the shelf.I went to walmart a while back and they had recalled toys on the shelf for 75% off.That makes me mad.they dont care just so they get their money out of it.

I believe its voluntary. I think the biggest issue is following the directions accurately. The medicines are very potent and some people dont follow the directions.

Companies removed the medicines on their own and it wasn't a mandatory thing. (is my understanding) I had to get something for my girls-and I noticed the new package was for "toddlers" when it used to state infants. CVS had a sign talking about proper dosage. (which is the main problem)

All my kids survived (ages 13-2) on medicine, maybe I was lucky, maybe I did a better job of dosage... whichever, I hate to see babies suffer and I hate to see parents try to half the dosages that are ment for older kids. I am conflicted for those to reasons. (I know you didn't ask...lol...just my thoughts)

I had not heard of any Children's Cold Medicines being recalled. Please send a list of the recalls. I have just given my daughter some new cough/cold medicine last night after picking it up at the store yesterday. What was the reason for the recall?

My father in-law asked the pharmacist the same question. The medicines for infants should be gone b/c of the recall, however for children 2+ years of age the medicine was not recalled.
Best advice, talk to the pharmacist and make sure the medication won't be harmful.

Ask your doctor, of course, but my doctor told me the same thing that others have said: It was a voluntary recall...there is nothing wrong with the medicines...it was just that people were making too many mistakes reading the dosage. I think maybe one of the brands said that you should give 1/2 teaspoon, and then it didn't have a mark on the little cup that corresponded with 1/2 teaspoon, so people were giving the wrong dosage. Basically, our pediatrician told us that as long as we know how to carefully read the dosage instructions on the bottle, it is fine to use.

Were they actually recalled or just additional warnings sent out about how they are used?

It was a voluntary recall to change the dosage to not to give it to children under 2. I spoke to our pedi and he said it was still okay to use as long as you only give the dosage the doctor tells you to and you don't mix like Tylenol Cold and Tylenol and to make sure you communicate with your spouse or anyone else that may be giving medicine so that you don't double dose them.

The medicine was not recalled because there was anything wrong with it. It was recalled b/c people didn't dose their children properly and if used incorrectly it can be dangerous.

The medications were recalled for use on children under the age of 6 and the meds are packaged for use on kids older than 6 in addition to the dosages for under 6. Also, the recall was voluntary, not mandatory.

It was a voluntary recall and had to do with dosing amounts, not the medicine itself. My pediatrician said that the medicines are fine to use if used in the correct dose for the weight of the child. She also said, however, that they may not work in children, so the use of them while not dangerous, per se, may be pointless. If you have concerns, then I would just avoid them altogether as you're doing, but they are safe in the right amounts if they aren't mixed with other medications containing the same active ingredients.
